A call to authorship: History of Chowning family suggested

About: Amandaville to outside world could mean a boat or plane ride

Open letter to John Chowning

John, why don't you write a book about your family. It could be a great part of the historical record of the area. We need more of that sort of thing written by capable authors. It could be a significant part of the record of this area. Start now, so when you retire you will have some of what you need collected and ready to be assembled.

Amandaville to outside world could mean a boat or plane ride

The late Chattin Chowning owned an airplane as a means of flying out "to civilization" from the beautiful plantation-like farm on Scenic KY 704 now called "Hopewell Acres. To get from Amandaville to Burkesville could mean a float trip down Crocus Creek, as late as the 1950's. It's why a son carries on efforts to get Adair County's Dug Hill reconstructed.

By John Chowning

My dad was one of the first people in this part of the country to have a private plane, and he flew all over the state, and other states, on business.

I have run across many people in this part of Kentucky who would associate my last name with him because they met him, or heard of him from those days.

Carol Perkins: Don't Make Me Go

Using guilt as the ultimate motivator, the author is able to get her reluctant spouse to attend functions he'd rather not go to.
To read her next previous story click on Sally Was a Good Girl

By Carol Perkins

If I have learned one thing about Guy in our forty years, it is that he does not like what he does not like and he is not good at faking it. I had rather leave him at home than take him somewhere he doesn't want to go; however, there are times when going is the right thing to do.

Long ago, I learned that Guy was not going with me to a wedding unless one of the two involved was a relative. Not that I expected him to sit on the edge of the couch waiting to go, but I never expected him to whine about having to go. "Are you sure I have to go?"

Tom Chaney. #208. June 7, 2009: 1876 by Gore Vidal

Of Writers And Their Books, Sunday, 7 June 2009: Tom Chaney Book Review #208, 1876, by Gore Vidal. Last week's Tom Chaney book review: An American Gospel by Erik Reece

By Tom Chaney
bookstore@scrtc.com

There are some authors whose books I should never get around. If I spy one out of place in the store, I am apt to pick it up and re-re-read for the umptyleventh time. Those authors go on my senility list I'm keeping of the books I want to read again for the first time.

Such a writer is Gore Vidal and such a book is 1876 his centennial novel for the bicentennial. It was written to complete his trilogy which covers the history of the republic between his Burr and the later Washington, D.C. -- George Washington to F.D.R.

Chuck Hinman No. #351: The Wild Strawberry Patch

II's Just Me Again #351: The Wild Strawberry Patch (Among My Souvenirs)
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story is Weaning a baby calf off its mother Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

by Chuck Hinman

The human mind is an awesome thing, not appreciated like it should be until something happens to it. I am keenly aware how precious it is because I witnessed first hand my dear wife Connie lose her mind totally over a 15-year time span. It was diagnosed as Alzheimer's Disease, a cruel destroyer of memories each one carefully packed as a precious jewel in one's personal treasure chest, the mind, for enjoyment just on a whim. Connie was denied what so many of us take for granted -- our precious memories.
