2:30pmCT latest estimate for Columbia Western Bypass to open

Mr. Pete Gilpin with the Kentucky Highway Department said about 15 minutes ago that he expected the final striping to be done in as little as 45 minutes, after which the Columbia Western Bypass would be open to traffic.

That would put the opening at approximately 2:30pmCT today, Thursday, October 9, 2008.

The rain yesterday and the breakdown of one of the striping trucks.

History maker: Della Harmon first on CBW from south

2008-10-09 - Jamestown Road at Columbia Western Bypass - Photo By Ed Waggener.
DELLA HARMON didn't set out to make history, but she did. She was just scoping out the fastest way to the new Super Wal-Mart at Holladay Place and happened to be the first car to enter the Columbia Western Bypass from the south after it was officially opened. There are four eye witnesesses. "I never was first in my life," she said, and flashed her beautiful smile. She was well ahead of Mr. Brooks Coomer, retired Adair County High School Principal, who drove his Fleetwood onto the parkway next, we think. Traffic was really light, despite the plunging gas prices and maybe because of the plunging economy, however.

Thanks CM that headline proved husband wrong

About: Sigogglin clocktower pictureTo ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I was delighted to see the word sigogglin used on the picture of the courthouse clock. I always heard the word sigogglin used for something that was crocked when I was growing up. Now I use the word. My husband has never heard of this word and laughs at me every time I use it; says there is no such word. Now I can show him someone else uses it and I'm not making it up.

Adair Clerk supports Voting in Honor of a Veteran

The program is sponsored by the Office of Secretary of State Trey Grayson

Story compiled from Commonwealth News Center story
with other CM source material included

Tens of thousands of Kentuckians will be "voting in honor of a veteran" this fall, and there is still time for individuals to sign up to participate in the program before the November 4, 2008 election. The Vote in Honor of a Veteran program is a program sponsored by the Office of Secretary of State Trey Grayson, and has been enthusiastically endorsed by Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair.

"It's a great idea. Anything which will get more people to vote is wonderful," she said, "and we couldn't be happier that it honors veterans."

(ADV) Marsha Walker, Candidate Adair School Board, District 2

MARSHA WALKER

District 2 - South Columbia 1 and 2, Gradyville and Milltown

I am committed to the continued academic success of Adair County students. I ask for your vote and support at the November 4th general election.
  • School experience: Classroom teacher, Adair County Schools, 17 years Family Resource Center Coordinator, Adair County Schools, 7 years
  • Adair County School Board member, 9 years
Kentucky's schools are experiencing difficult financial times. Districts like ours that are most reliant on state funding (because of lower property tax values) are really struggling.

A Kentucky Department of Education news release on September 2, 2008 stated, "Spending on P-12 education in Kentucky, as a percentage of the state's General Fund, has declined since the early 1990s. In 1994, education spending represented 48 percent of General Fund monies. In the 2008-2010 biennial budget P-12 education receives 43.8 percent of the General Fund." This year alone, it was predicted that 90 Kentucky school districts would lose more than 900 school staff, and important programs would be cut.

Our schools need your help. It is critical that your state senator and representative in Frankfort know that the educational needs of our youngest citizens must be a top priority. Kentucky's future success depends on it. You can make a difference by contacting them to express your support for education. Please contact me at 384-2243 if you want more information or have a question about our school district. Paid for by candidate, Marsha Walker

Big Rig Sports. Changeover season Time to shift to da Bears

Depressed over the Cubs, thought of recurrence of business Depression worries him, but Big Al finds solace from awful economic news in prospect of new season of 1st Place Chi football franchise

    By Allen Owens

As the leaves begin to change, and the temps begin to fall; realization begins to set in that another summer is fading away. This past summer was very magical for me as the boys of summer in Chicago had an above average baseball season. This was now finished as well since both teams from the Windy City had been eliminated from the post-season playoffs.
