Summer sunset in the Flatwoods

To Ed Darnell, c/o ColumbiaMagazine.Com

What an awesome picture. It would be nice if we would all take time to look above, and see all of God's Glory. In the clouds, sunrise, sunsets, lightning and the wonderful little stars, the full moon and the mighty host of birds that fill the skies above. Then the rainbows that sweap the skies with the most glorious arch that never ends. Thanks for sharing Ed Darnell. I am glad your heart is always on the above.

A Perkins: Tomatoes so large, will they fit?

2008-08-17 - Russell Guy Perkins Tomato Patch, North Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
A PERKINS: A whole new concept in tomatoes, so big it wouldn't believed if there were photographic evidence. Russell Guy Perkins extraordinary tomatoes are the talk of Adair and Taylor Counties. He's invited a few friends to come by and have one. He keeps them in the buckets on the table in the right foreground. The wonder is, would the bigger one, foreground, fit? And, how long would it feed a large family? A Today, Monday, August 18, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

Inquiry: When to Order Seedlings from Extension Office?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

When is the best time to order tree seedlings from the County Extension Office and what are the varieties available? What varieties are most desired by the Commonwealth of Kentucky?

s/Charles Marshburn

Great question: Hope we be getting answers for you soon from the Extension Office, from our own CM contributing tree expert, Billy Joe Fudge, and others. One annual spring tree planting project which is having great success. is to plant more redbuds, a promotion of Sue Stivers and the Adair County Tourism board. You can never have have enough redbuds. Our own choices are some people often fight: Fence row Cedars, copses of papaws, Trees of Heaven, locusts, for their beauty and perfume; more mainstream and needed are dogwood, black walnut, filberts, and tulip poplars. But those are only our ideas. -CM

Alan Reed IDs Shoulda Been Butterfly as The Robber Fly

About: Betty Sue Jasper photograph--Insects of Adair Co KY: Should have been orange butterfly

ColumbiaMagazine.com

"The photo is that of a Robber Fly," writes CU biology teacher Alan Reed. "There are many different species and they make their living by using strong piercing/sucking mouthparts. Depending upon species, they stab and suck the body fluids from certain bees, wasps spiders and other insects. Doesn't sound so appetizing, but all animals have to eat. The Robber Fly is harmless to people."
Thanks. And yes, Alan Reed, biology professor, is the same Alan Reed who is the Dean of South Central Kentucky Broadcasting and President of Shoreline Communications, whose flagship station is WHVE 92.7 FM the WAVE. -EW

Roast Pig and Charles Lamb

I love reading other people's mail. I like the sense of peeking into another's life unbidden. If they are not among the dead and are apt to catch me at it -- all the better. But enough to know that I'm eavesdropping -- even after sixty or ninety years.
