Insects of Adair Co., KY: The Robber Fly
2008-08-16 - Liberty Road, Columbia, KY - Photo By Betty Sue Jasper. BETTY SUE JASPER CAPTURED THIS INCREDIBLE PICTURE," and writes: "This afternoon I was chasing a very pretty orange butterfly around the thistle patch in my backyard. The butterfly, I am sure, was very happy with itself watching me going through the weeds and thorns to get a picture. I did get some pictures of the butterfly but they turned out blurry. I would have thought something was wrong with my camera if it wasn't for the fact that on one of my laps around the thistle patch I happened to take this picture of this not so pretty insect and it is very clear. So watch out, little butterfly, I will come looking for you again tomorrow!" MORE: "The photo is that of a Robber Fly," writes CU biology teacher Alan Reed. "There are many different species and they make their living by using strong piercing/sucking mouthparts. Depending upon species, they stab and suck the body fluids from certain bees, wasps spiders and other insects. Doesn't sound so appetizing, but all animals have to eat. The Robber Fly is harmless to people." FLICKR A Today, Sunday, August 17, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo Read More... | Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.

Insects of Adair Co., KY: Argiope spider spinning web
2008-08-16 - Montpelier Area, Adair County, KY - Photo By Heidi Caron. HEIDI CARON captured this incredibly detailed picture of one of Adair County's most beautiful insects, the wonderful Argiope spider. This one was at work in the window of her husband's pickup, she says. The spiders are often called garden spiders, and are prized by many for their bad bugacidability. Gradyville Argiope fanciers say it is a good sign if, in the fall, one finds an Argiope in every window. Vonnie Kolbenschlag points out that this spider is also known as the "Writing Spider," because it's web looks like cursive writing. We've had other photos of the beautiful arachnids, but never one so pretty. Scenic Adair Co., KY: Barbee Spring, Bull Run Road
2008-08-16 - Bull Run Road, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. THIS SPRING was on the property of his ancestors, Richard Robertson says, in giving some of the reasons why he's moving from the Mt. Gilead area of Green County to Bull Run Road. The spring has always been a welcome sight for travelers, and, at one time, its protector, J.L. Barbee says, it was the primary source of water for homes beyond on Bull Run Road. There's now a faucet to turn the water off, that's a modern touch. But the tin cup hanging on the right is an old timey touch. A Today, Sunday, August 17, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo Read More... | Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.
