Bank of Columbia celebrates 140 years of service A celebration was held last weekend to commemorate 140 years of service to the people of Adair and surrounding counties by the Bank of Columbia. The bank was established in 1866 and today has three locations: The historical downtown bank, the Jamestown Street bank and the Reed Street branch. The special event was held at the Jamestown Street bank where there was room for a tent to cover seating for the crowds both days and also to cover all the good food served up. McKinney, director of university communications 21st Century Needlepoint: Its Not Your Grandmas Footstool! is the title of an art exhibit by Debby Powell Franklin, who has had her work featured on the White House Christmas tree. The exhibit begins Monday, Oct. 16 and runs through Thursday, Nov. 2 at Campbellsville University. A reception is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16 in the new Gallery across from the Gosser Fine Arts Center. The gallery is in a stone house with a brown roof. There are great music events today, including the 5th Annual Casey Jones Fiddlin' Contest starting at 6:00pm and the Silver Eagle Band concert starting at 7:00pm Sightseeing opportunities: The northwest corner of Merchant and Campbellsville Streets is rapidly changing, as salvage operations are at a high level on the three lots purchased for the Adair Justice Center. The salvage operations will continue until midnight, October 15, 2006, when the county takes possession of the property; bids for complete removal of the remaining parts of buildings are already being advertised now. ELECTION 2006 COUNTDOWN: The fall election is just 25 days, from today. The next big election date is October 18, 2006, which is last day to submit lists of challengers to the county court clerk (20 days before election). Burkesville man arrested in kidnapping of elderly woman Arrest comes one day after incident reported. Brutal crimes alleged A Burkesville man, Robert D. Thompson, 27, has been arrested and charged with the assault, rape, robbery, and kidnapping of an elderly female in Burkesville one day before his arrest. The arrest followed a joint investigation by Detective George Atwood of Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY, and Cumberland County Sheriff James Pruitt, assisted by the Burkesville Police Department and other members of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department.
