Famous Adair Countians bag groceries to aid fight against cancer

The Columbia IGA Store, operated by Houchens Industries; some wonderful, caring Adair County customers; and a number of high-profile baggers raised several hundred dollars for the American Cancer Society on Wednesday, October 4, 2006. The figures aren't in yet, but it is estimated that the American Cancer Society could receive $300-700 or more from the local event.

Featured during the day were community baggers who volunteered to serve customers with a smile while creating some excitement in the checkout line. They included: Adair County Jailer Bug Knight, Sheriff Steve Cheatham,County Court Clerk and candidate for Adair County Judge Ann Melton, First National Bank CEO Ricky Huntsman, Seventh District Adair County Magistrate and candidate for Adair County Judge Terry Farris, Circuit Court Judge candidate Gail Williams, United Citizens Bank VP Mike Curry, Educator Ellen Zornes, George Payne, Melissa Feese of First National Bank, Sammy Dean of Warner Fertilizer, Bank of Columbia's Angela Dean, American Cancer Society Ambassador Peggy Lawson, Stephen Baker of Columbia Utilities Commission, Adair County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sue Stivers, and Randy Hadley of SK&D Nextel. Each accepted donations and tips to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Knifley Grade Center stays in loving hands

KNIFLEY GRADE CENTER WAS A BUSY PLACE SUNDAY after the sale as people came to check on their purchases, including new owners Randy and Melinda Quinn, whose interest is in preserving the school. The three Adair County Elementary Schools brought a total of $268,500 from auctions on September 30 and October 7, 2006. Shepherd Elementary on Burton Ridge brought $117,500 plus buyer's premium. Sparksville Elementary brought $76,000 plus buyer's premium and Knifley Grade Center brought $75,000 plus buyer's premium.

ACHS JV football team overwhelms Hart County, 38-22

The Adair County High School JV Football Team beat Hart County, Monday night, October 9, 2006 by a score of 38-22.

The victory gives the team a 2-1 record for the 2006 season.

Auctions bring more than budgeted for surplus schools

  1. Shepherd Elementary: $117,500 plus buyer's premium
  2. Sparksville Elementary: $76,000 plus buyer's premium
  3. Knifley Grade Center: $75,000 plus buyer's premium

The three Adair County Schools auctioned by Bryant Auction & Realty Company, Columbia, KY, brought a total of $268,500 in auctions held September 30 and October 7, 2006.

Adair County School Board Chairman Mike Harris said that he is pleased with the prices gotten for schools at Knifley, Sparksville, and Shepherd.

"From what I've heard of used school sales," he said, "we did quite well."

Republican Rally date changed to Friday, Oct. 20, 2006

Due to conflict with other events on October 21, 2006 the Republican Rally has been changed to Friday, October 20th, 2006 at the VFW Building. The rally will start at 6:00 p.m. (CST). Come join us for fellowship, soup, music, speakers, and auction items. Party official Lisa Lee says everyone is invited.

Knifley AVFD will hold Treat Fair, October 31, 2006

Tuesday, October 31, 2006: You are invited to participate in the annual Treat Fair at the Knifley Fire Department. The treat fair will be on Tuesday, October 31, 2006. In the past 200-300 children have participated in the treat fair. If candidates choose to join us, a booth will be available and already set up for your convenience. Today, Tuesday, October 10, 2006. Fiscal Court meets tonight

ELECTION 2006 COUNTDOWN: The fall election is just four weeks, 28 days, from today. And today is the last day to register to vote in the November election. Registration books will be closed from October 11 through November 13, 2006. Election day is Tuesday, November 7, 2006.
