Famous Adair Countians bag groceries to aid fight against cancer The Columbia IGA Store, operated by Houchens Industries; some wonderful, caring Adair County customers; and a number of high-profile baggers raised several hundred dollars for the American Cancer Society on Wednesday, October 4, 2006. The figures aren't in yet, but it is estimated that the American Cancer Society could receive $300-700 or more from the local event. Featured during the day were community baggers who volunteered to serve customers with a smile while creating some excitement in the checkout line. They included: Adair County Jailer Bug Knight, Sheriff Steve Cheatham,County Court Clerk and candidate for Adair County Judge Ann Melton, First National Bank CEO Ricky Huntsman, Seventh District Adair County Magistrate and candidate for Adair County Judge Terry Farris, Circuit Court Judge candidate Gail Williams, United Citizens Bank VP Mike Curry, Educator Ellen Zornes, George Payne, Melissa Feese of First National Bank, Sammy Dean of Warner Fertilizer, Bank of Columbia's Angela Dean, American Cancer Society Ambassador Peggy Lawson, Stephen Baker of Columbia Utilities Commission, Adair County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sue Stivers, and Randy Hadley of SK&D Nextel. Each accepted donations and tips to benefit the American Cancer Society. The money raised at the event counts toward the $100,000 goal for the 2007 Relay for Life drive in Adair County. To create public awareness about cancer and generate money for the American Cancer Societys mission to eliminate cancer, IGA sponsored Grocers Fight Cancer Day on Oct. 4. IGA donated a percentage of the days sales to the American Cancer Society. This years event raised thousands of dollars. Customers also helped by donating a dollar to the American Cancer Society to have a paper pink ribbon decorate the IGA windows in honor or memory of a loved one. The pink ribbon commemorates October as national breast cancer awareness month. If you would like to add your donation to help Grocers Fight Cancer Day, contact your American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or 270-782-3654 .
