POETRY: I Heard A Tree

Forester-poet Billy Joe Fudge shares newest lines about lessons to be learned from trees

PROLOGUE:
I think we all can learn lessons from this old tree. Lessons from his life, lessons from his awareness of his mortality, lessons from his desire not to be just remembered, but to know that we want our lives and deaths to have amounted to something. We all want to, in our leaving, to leave more than a blank spot, an emptiness.

TODAY, Sunday, October 1, 2006, in Adair County, KY

It's going to be a wonderful day in the area, with plenty to do and see. At 6:24 Sunday, October 1, 2006 is dawning with patches of fog toward what is forecast to be a bright and clear day.

If you are undecided on where to attend services today, see Directory of Churches. For more details on individual churches, click on website links in the directory or on the homepage of ColumbiaMagazine.com.

There are two major homecoming events in the county, at Barnett's Creek United Methodist Church in the northern part of the county, and at Hadley's Community Church on KY 704 south of Columbia, beyond Fairplay, KY.

This afternoon at 3:00pm CT, classical guitarist David Burgess will be in concert at Lindsey Wilson College's W.W. Slider Recital Hall.

In the evening, at 7:00pm CT, the Columbia Christian Church starts a five-day revival with Mike Frazier, evangelist.

See complete details on these events by clicking on Events in the Quick Links. Events at Columbia magazine are updated continuously, 24/7. We don't want you to miss out on anything! We appreciate news from organization publicity chairpersons, and very much appreciate photos from events. Please include the who, what, why, where, when and how. As every photographer knows, early morning and late afternoons in October present fantastic opportunities for pictures.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh, Oct. 1, 2006: Things could be a lot worse

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh
e-mail: joey_n_welsh@hotmail.com

BE OF GOOD CHEER, FOR THINGS COULD BE A LOT WORSE
I have been through some trying times in recent years - complications from diabetes, eight hospitalizations and 13 surgeries. Through it all I have cherished my sense of humor. When one of my dear friends said, Keep your chin up, my response was immediate. I replied, Which chin? People who are "ample" will know of what I was speaking. I found that the ability to laugh at myself was one essential ingredient for staying on even emotional and spiritual keel, and I called on that facility often.
