Taking a few minutes

By Veronica Arnold

While cutting hay or brush hogging, many farmers take extra time to protect wildlife. Yesterday while I was cutting I noticed a little fawn. I managed to stop and move the fawn to the fence line in teller grass. Of course, the baby kept running into the brush. This meant several stops to remove the fawn. I didn't mind, as the baby deer was so sweet and called his momma.

Taking a few minutes to preserve life, totally worth it. I then left a small pile of grain near the fawn for momma when she comes back. Does seen in the field this morning leads me to believe all reunited and ok.

LWC Alum named one of top medical school students in USA

From Duane Bonifer

Graduating at the top of your medical class is very impressive. But being named one of the top medical school students in the country is remarkable.

That's what 2019 Lindsey Wilson graduate Dr. Bethany Harting achieved this year when she received an honorable mention for the Student Doctor of the Year Award from the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents, a council of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.

Harting had already been named the Campbell (North Carolina) University 2024 Student Doctor of the Year. In the spring, she was one of three students who received an honorable mention for the national award, which is presented to students who demonstrate excellence in service to their medical school, leadership and research experiences, and dedication to the osteopathic profession.

Carol Perkins: A valuable legacy

Previous Column: The new rug

By Carol Perkins

My father, Henry Sullivan, passed away in 1977 at the age of 62. I thought he was old, but I now realize how young he was. I've written about him before, but occasionally I'll think of something special and want to share, especially near Father's Day.

A good friend told me about how she and her husband took their TV to my dad to have it repaired. He owned Sullivan's TV and Repair, which was the shop next to my mother's house. "I liked your dad," she said. "We'd talk and then he'd play the fiddle." My dad could do both very well.

His musical talent, a gift from God inherited from both the Sullivan and Acree (my grandmother's) sides, blessed the entire family. My dad played string and horn instruments, favoring the saxophone and fiddle. These instruments are now in our son's possession.

I was thinking about what a musical and artistic legacy he left behind.

Letter: Extended internet/phone outage in Oak Grove

By Jacquelyn Montgomery

Several Windstream customers in the Oak Grove area of Adair County have been without internet and phone service since May 16, 2025.

The automated message sent out every one to three days references "an area wide outage" that is expected to be resolved by tomorrow or the next day. No other explanation has been forthcoming via the Go Kinetic App, live text or phone.

Understanding the cause and reasons for the delay would be much more helpful than the automated message with promises we no longer believe.

Use the CM Comment Form if you are also experiencing this outage, or have more information about the cause or expected duration.

Flag Day: 14 June 2025

Columbia and Adair County have the wonderful tradition of flying the American flag on city streets and at businesses. I doubt that you can stand anywhere within the Columbia city limits and not see an American flag flying. The same goes for homes out in Adair County. We are a community who gives honor to the symbol of our country.

From Russell Lunsford, Commander
VFW Post 6097 Columbia

Flag Day is a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on June 14, the anniversary of the flag's official adoption. What we know fondly as the "Stars and Stripes" was adopted by the Continental Congress as the official American flag on June 14, 1777, during the Revolutionary War.

Colonial troops had been fighting under many different flags with various symbols--rattlesnakes, pine trees, and eagles. The early flags had inspirational slogans; "Don't Tread on Me," "Liberty or Death," "Conquer or Die."

On that 14th of June, Congress made the Flag Resolution of 1777, stating: "The flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white on a blue field ..."

Governor lauds 2024 as best year on record for KY Tourism

Louisville, KY - On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, building on the New Kentucky Home initiative, Gov. Letter: More memories from the Tasty Freeze

Mary Bardin writes:
In response to Phyllis Curry, I remember when Mr. and Miss Pendleton owned the Tasty Freeze. However I remember most when Arvin Burris and family owned it.

We all gathered there. We had the best times there. I would even sometimes get dressed up just to go hang out there. They had a jukebox. Sometimes we got free food depending on who was there at the time. The whole family tolerated a whole bunch of teenagers that didn't spend a lot of money there, but "shore" had good time.

One memory is when Butch Lewis let me drive his little Bridgestone motorcycle. As as I was crossing over Fairground Street, I hit a patch of gravel and wrecked. I think I gave Miss Burris the scare of her life when she realized I was the hooligan on the motorcycle. Good times for sure.

Vonnie Kolbenschlag announces new book

Vonnie Kolbenschlag has announced the publication of her latest book, Bible Stones Show The Way, which will be available for purchase on June 14, 2025, at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY, for an introductory price of $20 per copy.

Editors of the book note that it "highlights the physical and symbolic importance of the earliest Biblical stories, inviting readers to deepen their understanding of scripture and its profound, timeless messages. 'The Way' was a term used by early Christians to identify themselves, referring to Jesus saying, 'I am the Way.'"

Vonnie says, "Did you ever wonder how or where the Bible originated? Or, why it originated in the area called the Fertile Crescent, also called the Cradle of Civilization? I wondered, and as I learned, I decided to write a book about the early civilizations where Bible stories originated. I noticed that many Bible stories related to stones, so I checked a Bible's concordance and wrote short stories referencing stones in both Old and New Testaments."

The book also contains chapters with meanings of names and definitions of persons and places in Biblical history. There is a short chapter on historical stones now in museums. These stones relate to Bible happenings.

Bible Stones Show The Way can also be ordered online at Amazon, Thriftbooks, and Barnes and Noble Bookstores.
