Basketball: Rivalry Day for the Indians The 2024-2025 Adair County Indians will be recognized and given their 5th Region Champions rings between the girls' and boys' games. By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Friday, January 2, 2026, is Rivalry Day for the Adair County Indians, as they face off against the team up north, Taylor County (9-4). The boys' game follows the battle between the Lady Cardinals and Lady Indians which will get underway at 5:30pmCT. It has been some 35 months since the Cardinals last beat the Indians in Columbia, back in January of 2023. In addition to a three-game winning streak at home, the Tribe rides a three game winning streak in general against the Cardinals, and a four game regular season winning streak against Taylor County. Despite the recent success, matchups against Taylor County are generally tight, with the last two matchups being decided by three and four points. In a game that tight, almost anything can make a win or lose difference, including a loud crowd. Adair County has been killing Taylor County on this front with a pro-Adair County crowd being present for the matchups lately, whether the game is held in Columbia or Campbellsville. Tonight, with the game in Columbia, the Indians will be looking for a large pro-Tribe crowd to make a difference. So, please come out and cheer on your Indians as they look to extend their winning ways against the Team up North! Tip-off for the boys game is scheduled for 7pmCT on January 2, 2026, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available at hometownticketing.com. Letter: Quilt designs were promoted by Highway Department Doug McCammish writes: You or your mom may remember that there was a KY highway deparment (?) program 15-20 years ago that promoted the quilt design on barns along the highway. I suspect Sue Stivers told me about it, and we began noticing the number of barns in Adair and surrounding counties with quilt designs. Thanks for writing! The highway department definitely played an important part, but some barn owners may have been answering a higher cultural calling. As the late Ed Waggener commented back in 2008, "Mrs. Browning's daughter, Vicki Browning Pike, cannot abide uncouth cows. The artwork is to enrich their lives. After all, cows are people, too. If motorists along the parkway enjoy the art, that's a bonus. The quilt also has distlefinkian functions and brings good fortune, I'm sure." After checking out Robert's photo, linked below, we also recommend searching the CM archives for more great photos of barn quilts. Basketball: Come out tonight to support Indians Note from editor: The 2024-2025 Adair County Indians will be recognized and given their 5th Region Champions rings immediately following the girls games and prior to the boys games. By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Today is a day that comes only once a year: Adair County gets to host their rivals in a boys/girls double header at home. The Lady Indians will face a hot Lady Cardinals team that has won four straight, and 10 of their last 11 to open the season. Taylor County is led in scoring by freshman Kennedy Deener, who is averaging almost 26 points a game, followed by sophomore Greta Bradstreet, who averages 14 points per game. However, the Lady Indians are coming to the game from an impressive third place performance in the Kelly Holiday Classic, and winners of four of their last six games. No matter how hot the Lady Indians have been this season, it has been a struggle to defeat the Team up North. In fact, it has been since 2018 that Adair County has defeated the Lady Cardinals. Since that time, there have been some 17 matchups, four of which have come in the post-season. Despite what has been a dominant streak for the Cardinals, Adair county has notably given Taylor County several close scares, a nine point victory for the Lady Cardinals last year in Columbia saw them shoot just 31.5% from the floor, the worst they shot in a a win all season, and saw them held to 49 points, the second fewest in a win all season. Then, the next time Taylor County went on the road to face the Lady Indians they gave up 60 point of offense, the most they gave up the whole post season until they fell to Fredrick Douglass in the second round of the state tournament. Point being, that the running trend as off late, is that Taylor County seems to not be at their best when facing the Lady Indians, especially when doing so in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium. So tonight, we have a unique opportunity to continue this trend, and perhaps even amplify it, and that can be accomplished by making the environment as loud and electric as possible. Please, come out tonight and support your Lady Indians as they go to battle against the Lady Cardinals. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pmCT on January 2, 2026, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available at hometownticketing.com. 2025 was a huge year for Lindsey Wilson University By Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson University adopted a new name, community service milestones were reached, Blue Raider athletics won three national titles over one weekend and a record number of graduates were celebrated. Here's a look at the top 10 stories of 2025 at Lindsey Wilson. No. 1: Lindsey Wilson College Becomes Lindsey Wilson University In the words of Board of Trustees Chair Denny Howell of Louisville, Kentucky, "to reflect the mission, character and direction of this incredible school," the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees unanimously voted on April 25 for Lindsey Wilson College to become Lindsey Wilson University. "I've always been convinced that the best teaching and learning in the world happens at small, private colleges across the United States," said LWU President William T. Luckey Jr. "That is why this move does not change our mission, who we serve or what we do, but rather it reflects the dynamic nature of who we have become." The change took effect July 1, which included a celebration of more than 200 people. And from Sept. 8-12, Columbia-Adair County celebrated the new name with Lindsey Wilson Week. No. 2: Record Number of Graduates LWU graduated a record number of students in 2025. At its 121st commencement in the spring, Lindsey Wilson College awarded a total of 890 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees, the largest number of spring graduates in school history. At its 122nd commencement in the fall, Lindsey Wilson University awarded a total of 974 degrees -- 121 undergraduate degrees, 851 graduate degrees and two doctorates, the largest commencement class in school history. That added up to 1,864 graduates in 2025, also a school record. Great Wooded South VII: Going out West Read on for the latest installment from Billy Joe's days in the Forest Service. Click here for all the entries in the Great Wooded South series By Billy Joe Fudge The United States Forest Service was always looking for help on Western Fire Detail. We Kentucky Forest Rangers and Foresters had the training needed to, "go out West". That is what we called it back in the day. Goin' out West only had one catch! Even with all the training, we had to pass a simple physical. During the 1970s and 80s, the physical was an "either-or" fitness test. The way I remember it, you could run one and a half miles in under 12 minutes or pass a heart rate recovery test after a period of 5 minutes stepping up onto and back down off a 16 inch step. Each step was made to the steady beat of a metronome, that was set at a particular number of beats per minute. I smoked two packs of Marlboro and drank 6 to 12 cans of Pepsi a day and couldn't pass the maximum acceptable heart rate before performing the step exercise! I had no problem running the distance, however, so I always did that instead. My first trip out West began on a connecting flight to Knoxville from Lexington. It was my first flight on a commercial jet and was quite an experience. KY Rural Health Transformation Plan accepted in full From Scottie Ellis/Beth Fisher Frankfort, KY - On December 29, 2025, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that Kentucky's Rural Health Transformation Plan (RHTP) was accepted in full by the Trump administration, securing $212.9 million in funding to lessen the impacts of recent federal cuts and help support health care in Kentucky's rural communities. The funding was authorized by Congress earlier this year (2025) and administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. "Health care is a basic human right, and it was a priority for me and my administration to submit this application and fight for funding to support our rural health communities - especially following the passage of devastating Medicaid cuts," said Gov. Beshear. "I am proud our community-driven plan was accepted in full and now $212.9 million will help provide our fellow Kentuckians with the quality care they need and deserve." Kentucky's plan was developed by the Beshear administration in partnership with health partners from across the state and will use the $212.9 million over five years to help address the unique challenges rural Kentucky faces, including high rates of chronic conditions, maternity care deserts and gaps in coverage for oral care, emergency services and behavioral health. Carol Perkins: The Ski Trip (Part 1 of 5) Previous Column: One Voice By Carol Perkins "We need to try something new each year," I said to my husband, Guy, on my birthday. "We can go skiing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and maybe take a ride in a hot air balloon." He saw nothing wrong with what we were doing now. When high school students at the school where I taught, along with a few teachers, planned a midnight trip to Ski Butler, a resort with man-made snow not too far from Louisville, Kentucky, I insisted we go. I invited my best friend Judy to join us. "We've never been on a pair of skis!" Guy declared, emphasizing the word NEVER. "People get killed who know what they're doing." "I know, but how hard can it be? I see little kids skiing on TV." Letter: We can still roast chestnuts Jennifer Parker writes: I just read the article regarding roasting chestnuts. My childhood memories flooded back as I read it. My mother was British and came to the US after WW2 and met my father and they married. We grew up in the Santa Cruz Mountains of CA. Each Christmas she would purchase chestnuts and make chestnut stuffing for our Christmas turkey (Maybe on occasion for our Thanksgiving turkey as well), as she had done as a tradition "back home".Comments re: We can still roast chestnuts on an open fire Click here to share, print, or bookmark this article. 2025-12-30 18:04:40 | Comments | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Kentucky reports first pediatric influenza death this season From Kendra Steele/Beth Fisher Frankfort, KY - On Tuesday, December 30, 2025, state health officials with the Kentucky Department for Public Health announced that a Kentucky child has died from influenza (flu). This is the first pediatric flu death this season. The child, who lived in Kenton County, had not received this season's flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is the best way to protect against influenza. "Team Kentucky is deeply saddened by the loss of a child to influenza," said Dr. Steven Stack, secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. "Our hearts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time. This is a heartbreaking reminder that the flu is not always a mild illness, especially for young children and people with high-risk medical conditions." Seasonal influenza is increasing across the commonwealth, especially among children. The Kentucky Department for Public Health reports that emergency department visits and hospitalizations for the flu among children younger than 5 are higher than they were a year ago. The Kentucky Department for Public Health shares data on respiratory virus activity in Kentucky through its Respiratory Disease Data Dashboard and other resources available at chfs.ky.gov/agencies/dph/Pages/RespiratoryDiseases.aspx. "While flu activity is increasing across Kentucky, there are proven steps families can take to protect their loved ones," said Dr. John Langefeld, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health. "The flu vaccine is safe, effective and widely available. It is the best way to reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death."
