Dreamcatcher Program grants first recipient's dream

From Bart Logsdon

Glasgow, KY - The T.J. Community Mission Foundation has launched the Dreamcatcher Program, designed to fulfill a dream for critically or terminally ill patients residing in the T.J. Regional Health service area. The new program provides meaningful experiences for individuals facing life-threatening illnesses by helping them live out a personal dream close to home.

The program's inaugural Dreamcatcher recipient is Tiffany Wilson of Edmonton. Tiffany and her parents experienced a dream come true with a recent trip to Dollywood.

The all-inclusive trip featured a two-day pass to Dollywood, accommodations at Dollywood's Dream More Resort & Spa, and tickets to Dolly Parton's Stampede and Pirate's Voyage Dinner Show.

All expenses associated with Tiffany's experience were covered by the Dreamcatcher Program.

Fall colors and puppies

2025-11-04 - Fairplay, KY - Photo by Veronica Arnold.
Veronica writes, "Who doesn't love fall colors and puppies! The puppy is called Dolly, a Little Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. She is doing great after visiting Red Barn Vet for a puppy check. After I decided to name her Dolly, one employee said, 'Oh, who is this cute baby doll?'

I knew it... She just looks like a 'Dolly.' My girl thinks like Dolly Parton, and we believe pink is her color!"

High school students lead voter registration drive

From Joe Arnold

Louisville, KY - With the 2026 mid-term elections one year away, hundreds of new voters have been added to the rolls in Kentucky thanks to high school students participating in Co-op Champions, a program coordinated by Kentucky Electric Cooperatives, the association of all 26 electric co-ops in the commonwealth.

Thirteen seniors who served as delegates on the weeklong Electric Cooperative Washington Youth Tour this summer, including Hunter Farmer at Taylor County High School, are enlisted in the leadership initiative that takes their youth tour experience to the next level. Modeled after the cooperative principles that drive Kentucky's member-owned electric co-ops, the Co-op Champions program empowers students to engage in their communities, take initiative, and practice civic responsibility. In addition to supporting their local co-ops and volunteering in their communities, each of the Co-op Champions students hosted a Co-ops Vote registration drive.

Lindsey Wilson University to Build Indoor Golf Center

Jessica Smith Golf Center -- Donated by Earl & Marlene Smith to honor late golfer who was a Lindsey Wilson All-American, all-stater at Assumption High School.

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson University has one of the top golf programs in the NAIA, and pretty soon it will have one of the best indoor golf centers in the NAIA.

Lindsey Wilson will build the Jessica Smith Golf Center -- Donated by Earl & Marlene Smith. The 4,200-square-foot building, which will be opened in 2026, is named in honor of the late women's golfer Jessica Smith. A 2010 Lindsey Wilson graduate and a member of the Lindsey Wilson Athletics Hall of Fame, Smith died in a 2016 car crash at the age of 28.

The building is made possible by a gift from Smith's parents, Earl and Marlene Smith of Louisville, Kentucky.

"We wanted to honor Jessica," said Earl Smith. "She enjoyed her time at Lindsey Wilson so much, as a student and as a member of the golf team. She loved being on the team. Probably the most important thing is that she grew so much while at Lindsey Wilson."

The Smith Golf Center will be one of the few indoor golf practice centers in the NAIA, according to Lindsey Wilson Athletic Director Willis Pooler.

Kentucky Color: Longtime Residence

By Billy Joe Fudge

The evidence is overwhelming that this hollowed out Scarlet oak (photo with article) has been a residence, probably for decades. That evidence is rodent droppings piled outside the door.

This den is the winter home of the noisy little Eastern chipmunk, or at least that is what the evidence shows. They spend much of the winter sleeping for extended periods of time. They are not true hibernators, since they wake up every now and again. When they wake up they eat the nuts, acorns and seeds that they have stored in their den. They don't stray far from their den, thus the droppings pile up outside the entrance.

Their distant cousins, Grey and Fox squirrels, are out and about all winter feeding on the same food sources as the chipmunks, some of which they may have hidden during late summer or fall. Therefore their droppings are scattered around all over the place.

I grew up here in the Great Wooded South calling chipmunks "ground squirrels". According to most sources, there are no ground squirrels in Kentucky. They are larger than chipmunks, live mostly out in fields and hibernate in burrows all winter.

The manmade items in the photo are: the most famous walking stick in the Great Wooded South, my Biltmore stick that is used to measure tree diameters and of course, the notebook for recording estimated footages of the standing timber.

Tommy Druen: Collective gullibility

Previous Column: What is Love?

By Tommy Druen

It was a Wednesday night in the fall of 1989. I was twelve years old, sitting in a half-empty sanctuary at our small country church. Midweek services were never well attended--maybe ten or twelve people in total. That particular night our pastor had brought a whiteboard, treating it more like a class than a sermon.

I'll admit, my attention wandered. I probably thumbed through the hymnal or stared at the ceiling, anything to pass the time. The lesson wasn't aimed at a middle schooler anyway. But I remember the moment our pastor drew a strange symbol on the board and asked if anyone knew what it was.

I leaned toward my mom and whispered, "Isn't that Pisces?"

It wasn't. It was the ichthys--a fish symbol used by early Christians. But in a sanctuary that small, a whisper might as well have been shouted. The pastor heard me and asked me to repeat it aloud. I hesitated, not because I was shy, but because I wasn't sure.

Football: Indians fall to Eagles

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians fell to the Campbellsville Eagles 52-6 on Friday October 31, 2025.

The Indians were unable to stop the Eagles rushing attack, giving up 306 yards of rushing plus 148 yards through the air. The Indians offense also sputtered, especially through the air, putting up just 78 passing yards. Junior Quarterback Madden Moye was 7 for 13 for 78 and two interceptions.

The rushing attack looked better with 131 yards, led by senior Ryder Rodgers, who had 23 rushes for 83 yards and the Indians' only touchdown. Two other Indians posted positive rushing yards. Junior Brody Karnes had five carries for 42 yards, and sophomore Callum Darnell had seven carries for 12 yards. Darnell also led the team in receiving, with five catches for 68 yards.

Ryder Rodgers led the Tribe in tackles, with 11, followed by Callum Darnell with six and Brody Karnes with five.

All in all, this was a very tough game for the Indians against a very good Eagles team. The Indians will now lock in and prepare to go on the road to face #1 seed Murray (10-0) in the first round of the Class 3A 2025 UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pmCT on Friday, November 7, 2025, in Murray.

Time to get the furnace inspected

It's time to have the furnace inspected. Safety is the most important reason. A professional inspection can detect issues like gas leaks, carbon monoxide buildup, or faulty wiring, preventing potential fire hazards or poisoning risks. Carbon monoxide, a silent killer, causes over 400 deaths annually in the U.S., per CDC data.

Regular maintenance, including cleaning filters and checking ducts, ensures your furnace runs efficiently, reducing energy waste.

Safe Halloween draws more than 1,100 area residents

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson University student Peyton Allen '27 didn't have much free time during the last month.

That's because the human services and counseling major from Louisville, Kentucky, dedicated most of her free time decorating her corner of Phillips Hall for the university's annual "Safe Halloween."

On Friday, October 31, 2025, 1,120 area children and family members made their way through four Lindsey Wilson residence halls during the university's 31st "Safe Halloween," according to Lindsey Wilson Director of Student Activities Stephanie Blackwood.

The costumed guests -- which often included children and family members -- filled their bags with candy while encountering beloved, feared and loathed characters from the stage and screen.

Allen's area of Phillips Hall was decorated in the theme of the 2012 Disney animated comedy Wreck-It Ralph. Allen dressed as the film's character Vanellope von Schweetz.

To prepare the hallway for trick-or-treaters, Allen and fellow residents started work in late September, spending as many as 20 hours a week on their hallway's design. Allen said the work was worth it when she handed out candy to children during Friday night's "Safe Halloween."

Silent City 2025: Marshall Paull Todd

Mary Marshall Paull Todd was a fifth grade teacher. She was a feminist who called herself a defender of her family heritage, her Cumberland Union Presbyterian Church on Burkesville Street, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Democrat party.

Late in her life, we asked Marshall what she might advise today's young women from her experience? She was troubled that, while women were able to vote and own land, still they weren't safe from physical abuse in their own homes and had not moved near equal pay for equal work.

After a few moments thought, Marshall said, "I'd advise young women to get the education that would train them to have a good job, to be able to stand on their own feet and have healthy self esteem, and I'd advise them to take self-defense classes."

Marshall Paull Todd portrayed by Linda Waggener, video by JD Zornes.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Unless you've been living off the grid, you've probably heard about drugs like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy, and perhaps even considered asking your doctor about them. They're all part of a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, or just GLP-1s.

According to Indiana University Health, the drugs were originally approved to help lower blood sugar, but proved exceptionally effective to help patients lose weight without the potentially risky side effects associated with drugs like phentermine. Drugmakers raced to develop newer versions that would be marketed expressly for weight loss and the first such drug, Wegovy, received approval in 2021. Since then, more GLP-1s have been approved and researchers have found that the drugs may also be useful for the prevention and treatment of heart disease -- something diabetes patients are twice as likely to develop compared to people without diabetes.

And the race to develop newer and better GLP-1 drugs hasn't slowed down.
