KSP: Post 15 warns public of ongoing phone scam

From Trooper Jonathan Houk

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 is warning citizens about a phone scam affecting people in the Post 15 area. Individuals have reported receiving phone calls from someone falsely claiming to be Trooper Houk and other KSP Troopers. The caller threatens arrest unless money is sent to them immediately. Please know that this is a scam.

We want the public to know that KSP will never contact anyone by phone to demand money by threatening legal action or arrest. These tactics are fraudulent and intended to intimidate people into sending money under false pretenses. If you receive a phone call like this, hang up immediately.

Anyone receiving suspicious scam calls similar to this tactic is urged not to provide personal or financial information to the caller. Individuals can report scams to the Kentucky Attorney General at (888) 432-9257, online at http://ag.ky.gov/scams or by contacting their local KSP Post.

Kentucky taps the brakes on speeding this summer

From Marla Marrs

Frankfort, KY - As travel increases this summer, Kentuckians are encouraged to slow down, obey posted speed limits and help keep everyone on the road safe.

Speed limits are not merely suggestions; they are in place to protect everyone on the road. Driving over the speed limit greatly reduces a driver's ability to react to unexpected situations, such as stopped traffic, road debris or encountering vulnerable road users such as highway workers, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.

Speeding and aggressive driving are major contributors to roadway fatalities. In fact, approximately one-third of all traffic fatalities in Kentucky involve a speeding or aggressive driver. In response, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is partnering with law enforcement agencies statewide to implement the "Not So Fast, Kentucky" speed awareness campaign through July 31, 2025.

"We want families to have a great time exploring all the beautiful things Kentucky has to offer this summer," said Gov. Andy Beshear "But to keep everyone safe on the road, I'm asking all Kentuckians to slow down, stay focused and be patient with each other on the road. Together, we can prevent crashes and make sure everyone gets home safely."

Great Wooded South, Chapter I

By Billy Joe Fudge

The Nascence
As a Forest Ranger with primary duties of wildland fire prevention and fire suppression, I discovered and developed an affinity with that which I named the Great Wooded South.

The Great Wooded South is a place; a place of a people and a culture without borders. A place that wraps itself around each of its inhabitants as one's skin envelops sinew, bone and breath. At the same time, a place enveloping all its community of citizens in a life giving forest of hills; of hollows; of rivers, creeks, streams and springs; of bogs; of plateaus; of desert dry ridge tops; of rocky outcroppings, boulders and bluffs; of trees young and old; of clearings both large and small!

We all live in this forest and this forest lives in us. It is our home. Yes, your forest, our forest, my forest is the Great Wooded South. South Central Kentucky, South Eastern Kentucky and Northeastern Middle Tennessee are the center of the Eastern Appalachian Foothills and are the heart of the Great Wooded South.

I began my career with the Kentucky Division of Forestry on August 1, 1972. Little did I know that it would become much more than a career. It became an identity that would follow me way beyond the 30 years of my employment and indeed would do so for the rest of my life.
