Heirloom clematis

2023-04-19 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst.
Sharon writes, "My heirloom clematis 'Candida' always rushes to break dormancy, must always be swaddled in old sheets to endure the inevitable frosty nights of March.... I marvel each season at the coloring of Candida's blooms, the delicate stripes of pale green against creamy white, deep rose pink of thread-like stamens."

Whitehurst Diaries: The Firsts of Spring

By Sharon Whitehurst

From my desk I have a view through the south window of the hummingbird feeder. My journal for 2022 notes the arrival of the first hummer on April 13th. I brewed a batch of nectar and hung the feeder on April 6th this year having observed the posted hummingbird migration charts and wanting to be sure any early birds were given a welcome.

It was 40 degrees F. at 7:30 A.M. on Monday morning when the familiar shape of a hummer zooming in for breakfast caught my eye. How quickly I have resumed the habit of glancing out the window, pausing for a moment to watch if a bird is at the feeder.

Wednesday evening the silhouette of a male hummer hovered against the pale pink and saffron backdrop of the twilight sky. I stepped quietly onto the screened porch, moved to within a few feet of the hanging feeder. A second bird flashed across the flight path of the one leaving the feeder confirming there are now two males in residence waiting for the ladies to arrive.

The month of April brings new delights nearly every day.

Critical fire weather conditions on Thursday

From Mike Keltner, Director,
Adair Co. Emergency Management

Critical fire weather conditions are expected tomorrow across most of Kentucky and southern Indiana.

A combination of low relative humidity values, warm temperatures, breezy winds, and drying surface fuels will allow any fires to spread rapidly. Accordingly, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for all of central Kentucky and southern Indiana from NoonET until 8pmET tomorrow, April 20, 2023. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Wildfire at Natural Bridge grows as a result of high winds

From John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - Nearly 100 firefighters from the Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF), U.S. Forest Service Daniel Boone National Forest and local fire departments with multiple engines and aerial resources are working to the wildfire at Natural Bridge State Resort Park/Nature Preserve in Slade, Kentucky.

Winds on Tuesday pushed the fire over containment lines, expanding it to more than 100 acres in the last 24 hours and onto US Forest Service Daniel Boone National Forest land.

"What makes Natural Bridge unique, namely its arches and cliff lines, also makes it extremely difficult to control wildfire," Division of Forestry Director/State Forester Brandon Howard said. "Hand crews with fire rakes have to construct containment lines while maneuvering in, around, and sometimes over cliffs."

BG Veterans Center will honor the Late Col. Robert E. Spiller

From Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Bowling Green, KY - On April 19, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear joined veterans, state and local leaders and veteran service organization representatives to announce the new Bowling Green Veterans Center will be named after the late Col. Robert E. "Bob" Spiller, USA Retired.

Col. Spiller is widely known as the driving force behind the Bowling Green Veterans Center. This was a mission he took on after retiring from the U.S. Army and returning to Bowling Green where he volunteered to drive veterans to critical medical appointments in Nashville, which was the closest Veterans Affairs facility. Col. Spiller wanted to see a facility built in Bowling Green to better serve veterans in Western Kentucky.

Efforts have been underway for more than 10 years to make Col. Spiller's dream a reality, and last year, Gov. Beshear joined federal, state and local leaders to break ground on the center. The center will be located in the Kentucky Transpark in Warren County and is expected to be completed in 2024.

Shooting at Anderson's was personal, not random

Update: ACSO: Two shot during fight at local business

Any time gunshots happen in public places, there's reason for alarm and the report of a shooting at Anderson's Pizzeria Tuesday night brought law enforcement from three agencies to the scene.

Putting together what is known this morning, it turned out to be a personal fight between two customers with a third person, an employee of the new owner, reportedly involved trying to break it up. One was hospitalized from the incident.

Three have been arrested and charged with public intoxication/controlled substance/not-alcohol, and disorderly conduct. An official report will come from Sherrif Brockman since the restaurant is located in the county, not city the limits.
