KY State Parks to host Camper Appreciation Weekend

From Anita Hatchett

Frankfort, KY - Camping season is in full swing at Kentucky state parks. To celebrate, all Kentucky State Park campgrounds will be offering two nights of camping for the price of one during their annual Camper Appreciation Weekend, April 28-30, 2023.

"Camping at a Kentucky state park is a great way to experience the natural beauty of our commonwealth, get some fresh air and spend quality time with family and friends," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "I hope folks will take advantage of this offer and get out and visit some of the great outdoor spaces we have here in Kentucky."

The 2023 camping season officially opened on March 13 at all 30 Kentucky State Parks campgrounds, which feature about 2,300 campsites across the state.

The weekend of April 28-30 is the annual Camper Appreciation Weekend, when campers get two nights for the price of one. State park campgrounds offer a variety of activities during Camper Appreciation Weekend, including entertainment, arts and crafts, miniature golf, guided nature hikes, bonfires, tours, cookouts and much more.

"We are delighted to welcome guests back to campgrounds at state parks across Kentucky," said Department of Parks Commissioner Russ Meyer. "The warmer weather makes for ideal camping conditions, and we look forward to welcoming visitors for Camper Appreciation Weekend. Take advantage of this great deal to get out and enjoy Kentucky's natural beauty."

Gov. Beshear recently signed two pieces of legislation - House Bill 553 and House Joint Resolution 76 - that allocate funding to Kentucky State Parks for repairs and upgrades. HB 553 designates $13 million to improve Jenny Wiley State Resort Park and Lake Barkley State Resort Park. HJR 76 designates $40 million toward campground upgrades, $20 million toward utility upgrades and $6 million toward broadband and Wi-Fi upgrades.

All state park campgrounds have water and electric services with dump stations or sewer hookups, along with picnic tables and fire rings at each improved site and bathhouses. Primitive sites are also available.

Sites will remain open through mid-November, and a few will remain open during the winter months.
