Child Abuse Prevention Month opens with KY Capitol tradition From Jill Seyfred Frankfort, KY - Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky (PCAK) marked the start of Child Abuse Prevention Month on March 31, 2026, with its annual Pinwheel Planting Ceremony at the Capitol in Frankfort. Joined by PCAK staff, board members, and community partners, Governor Andy Beshear delivered remarks and launched the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign. Each April, the initiative brings silver and blue pinwheels to communities across the Commonwealth to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect. Held in the English Garden, the event brought together hundreds of advocates and community leaders for the ceremonial planting. Each blue and silver pinwheel planted, the national symbol for child abuse prevention, represents a commitment to protecting Kentucky's children, supporting families, and ensuring every child has the healthy childhood they deserve. "This event is critical to raise awareness. There is far too much child abuse in this country, and in this world, and as responsible adults, we all have a duty to stop it," Gov. Andy Beshear said. "Somewhere out there is a child who needs our help, and we need to make sure that people know the warning signs." Watson Adair County Genealogical Society Family names are memorialized in communities throughout Adair County: Absher community and post office for Rev. William Henry Harrison Absher. The community and existing church were known as Egypt at least in the 1840s and 1850s well before the post office was created. Bliss was a post office and community in the 1890s. It was named for Professor James L. Bliss--or Mrs. Bliss, nee Nannie Frances Shephard--who operated a school locally in the Turk community. Letter: Removal needed, not pruning Billy Joe Fudge writes: Pruning is not an option for mature trees that are suffering from chronic urban blight. The asphalt covers their roots on one side and looks like a pasture field which means the soil is compacted on the other side. Compacted soils cannot readily absorb rainfall and since there are few spaces in the soil to store the moisture, the tree limbs are dying which means the trees are dying.Comments re: Running the Gauntlet 2026-04-01 10:15:17 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
