Sculpture by Tim Smith tells important story

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson University art professor Tim Smith has created a striking 11-foot bronze sculpture that pays tribute to early 19th century resident Jane Todd Crawford of Green County. The artwork was unveiled December 13, 2025, in front of the Greensburg, Kentucky, hospital that bears her name. (See also: Greensburg Arts Council holds statue dedication)

Dubbed the "Mother of Abdominal Surgery" by a bronze plaque in front of the statue, Crawford was a 46-year-old Green County resident who rode 60 miles over three days by horseback to Danville, Kentucky, to have a 22.5-pound ovarian tumor removed from her on Christmas Day 1809 by pioneer surgeon Dr. Ephraim McDowell. She was the first woman to survive surgery to remove an ovarian tumor.

The medical procedure lasted for 25 minutes on a kitchen table in McDowell's home and did not include anesthesia. Crawford returned home 25 days later and went on to live for another 32 years, dying at the age of 78 in 1842 in Graysville, Indiana.

Smith said that his sculpture, which sits on a marble base in the center of a lighted pool and is designed to slowly rotate around three times an hour, tells "a very important story."

Basketball: Indians in Berea Holiday Classic

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team is back on the court today as they travel to Berea for three days of basketball in the Berea Holiday Classic.

The Indians have had a week off since their last outing, a 70-56 road win over Marion County. They open up the classic against Tates Creek (5-2) at 6:30pmCT on Friday, December 19, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Commodores of Tates Creek played just yesterday and picked up a 72-46 win over Franklin County on the road. The leading scorer for Tates Creek is senior Stephen Franklin, who is averaging almost 19 points per game. The Tribe will look to slow him down in this one if they want to pull out a win. The name of the game for the Commodores this season has been slowing down the opponents' scoring. They are 4-0 when holding their opponent to under 60 points, and 1-2 when they give up 60 points plus.

If you can, make the trip to Berea and cheer on your Indians this evening at 6:30pmCT at Berea Community High School, 1 Pirate Pkwy, Berea, KY.

The Indians play again at 10amCT on Saturday morning, December 20, 2025, facing Madison Southern at Madison Southern High School, 279 Glades Rd, Berea, KY. On Sunday, they are back at Berea High School to face Louisville Central, with tipoff scheduled for 1pmCT.
