Scams grow in this season of buying and giving

Use these rules of thumb in this season of making purchases and giving to charity. Pause and think if you are responding when you should first double check the source. Use these tips:

STOP - Every time you are asked to send money or give out your personal information! Do not click, do not copy, do not paste.

CHECK - That they are who they say they are. Call the published number you know or visit their official website, don't assume the number they are calling from is real.

ACT - Report to law enforcement and to your family and friends.

Updated Jan/Feb Little League Schedule

By Daniel Hedges

I have had to revise the Little League Basketball schedule for the Spring, in particular with K-1. The weather will more than likely change this schedule further.

Yes, a couple of K-1 will have an extra game, and there is no way to balance this in the time frame we have. I also tried to look at matchups to balance the number of times teams play. Yes, with a number of games and timeframe, some teams will play each other more and it will not be completely uniform. Thank you.

KY Spay or Neuter license plate gets a fresh look

From Madison Pergrem Cannon

Frankfort, KY - More than 20 years after it was first introduced, Kentucky's Spay or Neuter special license plate has a new look, Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell announced this week.

"Practicing responsible pet ownership and the need to reduce the stray and homeless pet population are the messages surrounding this new eye-catching plate design," Commissioner Shell said. "Kentucky has 411 animal shelters and animal welfare organizations making it obvious we, as a society, need to do more to control the pet population. This plate reminds us of that in a beautiful new way."

The new design, which was crafted by Lexington graphic artist Hayli Strickland, features peek-a-boo images of a kitten and dog on a green background. The bottom features the words "Spay or neuter your pets" with a red pawprint in the shape of a heart overlapping the words.

The new plate, which can be personalized, is available for purchase at County Clerk offices across the state or on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's website.

Sydney Newton receives Milken Educator Award

For Lindsey Wilson University graduate Sydney Newton, receiving a Milken Educator Award is a tribute to her teachers. The award-winning Taylor County High School teacher was inspired by the educators who helped shape her career.

By Duane Bonifer

Campbellsville, KY - When Sydney Newton '16 joined fellow Taylor County High School teachers, staff members and students on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, in the school's Citizens Bank Arena, she assumed they were there to take part in what promised to be a fairly typical celebratory schoolwide assembly.

The school's low brass band was playing festive music, and Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman and Commissioner of Education Robbie Fletcher were on hand to praise the teachers, staff and students for the school's recent academic accomplishments and noteworthy test scores.

But then things took a turn when visitor Jane Foley walked onto Clem Haskins Court to announce that one of the school's teachers was about to be named a recipient of a prestigious Milken Educator Award.

"I was like, 'Oh my gosh, some teacher in our building is about to get that money, this award and get to go to (Washington) D.C.,'" said Newton. "I was like, 'This is amazing, this is amazing that this exists.'"

Then Foley, who is the senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, called Newton to the floor because the English language arts teacher was named Kentucky's 64th recipient of a Milken Educator Award and the first Taylor County teacher to earn the honor.
