Carol Perkins: A Mad Fit

Previous Column: Carol Perkins: Thanksgiving in Hiding

By Carol Perkins

I haven't had a mad fit in a long time, but I couldn't control myself the other day. I went to the basement to sort through my sewing room, trying to organize now that I'm finished sewing for a while, and ended up in the Christmas room.

A pile of lights filled a tub, so I sat and started sorting them across my lap. One string lapped around another string, and by the time I pulled one out, plugged it in to see if it worked, and began on another, I was miffed.

"This is for the birds," I thought.

I also wished for kids to help because they would not have gotten themselves into a stew.

Blue lights were tangled around white lights. The blue ones were used outside last year, so why did I have them with the white? Maybe I used some white with blue.

Whatever happened when I took them off the bushes ended with them wrapped around each other in a mess. When I thought I had found the end of a strand that I was successfully unraveling, that strain belonged to another one I hadn't tackled yet.

Paying tribute to a legendary LWU English Professor

English professor Kendall Sewell honors the late Mark Dunphy by teaching 'Moby-Dick' with the text he used as a Lindsey Wilson student.

By Duane Bonifer

When Lindsey Wilson University English professor Kendall Sewell teaches students about one of the great American novels, he channels a bit of one of the great Lindsey Wilson professors.

In Sewell's "American Literature I" survey class, students are introduced to the writings of Herman Melville, including his epic 1851 novel, Moby-Dick; or, The Whale.

One of texts Sewell uses to discuss what many consider to be the great American novel is an edition of Moby-Dick that Sewell used as a Lindsey Wilson undergraduate in an English class taught by the late Mark Dunphy.

"It feels connective back to that moment when I was a student and seeing Dunphy introduce us to Melville in his animated way," said Sewell, who graduated from Lindsey Wilson in 2013. "It feels like a small way of honoring Dunphy's legacy and his legendary commitment to teaching."

Letter: Memories from the Past

Comments re: The Flag at ACMS

By Dave Rosenbaum

The photo of the flag at ACMS brought to mind an episode from many decades ago. For some undisclosed reason, the smartest student in our class decided to prank. He first went to Russell & Co. on the Square and purchased the largest pair of pink ladies bloomers that Russell had. He then proceeded to the White Cash Market and bought a can of Crisco. Then to ACHS, climbed the flag pole and hung the pink bloomers to wave in the wind. On the way back down the pole, he greased it with the Crisco.

Someone ratted out the fellow and Principal Brooks Coomer was anything but amused by the prank and, as punishment, banned the culprit from membership in the Beta Club. I'll just bet that it is the only recorded time that expulsion from the Beta Club was used as punishment.

KSP annual Trooper Teddy Sale supports children in crisis

From Sherry Bray

Frankfort, KY - As holiday shopping begins, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) encourages Kentuckians to give a gift that goes beyond the season. The agency's annual Trooper Teddy Black Friday sale runs November 27, 2025, through December 2, 2025, offering the signature teddy bears at a special price of $20.

Honors students explore diverse topics at LWU Fall Symposium

The R.V. Bennett Honors Program is a 'launching pad' for curious and creative minds.

By Duane Bonifer

The TV show Game of Thrones might seem an unlikely way to study adverse childhood experiences, but that was but one of the creative research projects presented on Tuesday, November 25, at the 2025 fall symposium of the Lindsey Wilson University R.V. Bennett Honors Program.

Held in the university's Holloway Building, 17 Lindsey Wilson honors students gave 18 presentations on academic work, research and experiences, turning two rooms of the Katie A. Murrell Library into an academic conference that's been called a "launching pad" for Lindsey Wilson student scholars.

"I always expect them to do well, but every time they up their game," said Lindsey Wilson history professor Elizabeth Tapscott, who is also R.V. Bennett Honors Program director. "The level of work that these students do is always a joy to watch."

This fall's symposium featured both a high level of quality and quantity of research by Lindsey Wilson undergraduates as the event required two rooms -- the Thomas D. Clark Reading Room and the Keith Stearns Room -- to accommodate the presentations.

Achilles Award presented to Anne Devore-Birge

By Kim Harwood, Executive Director
Edmonton Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce

Anne Devore-Birge was presented with the Achilles Award at the Annual Chamber Christmas Banquet on Monday, November 24, 2025.

The Edmonton Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce recognizes a deserving community member for the Achilles Award each quarter. Achilles was the Chamber mascot and beloved companion of Bill & Chris Lagermann. He made an appearance at most every Chamber event, and he will be forever loved and missed by this community.

You may know Anne Devore-Birge as a local business owner and huge supporter of all things Metcalfe. Anne has owned and operated Wall Works on the Square in Edmonton since 2016.

Anne is an ideal choice for the Achilles Awards for many reasons, but her gift of caring for others and answering the call in times of tragedy has been apparent over the last several weeks. Anne has sent food to families who have lost loved ones, provided flowers in situations where the money was not there. She is known for her generosity in the community, donating to school events, benefits to pay for medical care and funeral expenses, not to mention the gift of listening to those who just need to talk.

Anne supports and encourages other small business owners and is a role model for perseverance. Anne's business has seen lean months, but she does not give up, she works that much harder. These qualities are what makes Anne an ideal choice for the Achilles Award.

The Achilles Award does not come with money or ribbons but a heartfelt appreciation for those who help make Metcalfe County a better place, thank you Anne Devore-Birge for doing just that!
