Carol Perkins: Ready to go home Previous Column: I'm Falling and I Can't Get Up By Carol Perkins The only full day with no rain brought us to the beach early. The guy from whom we rented the chairs the day before set them up again. The ocean breeze sang a lullaby, and we were the happiest we could be. As I drifted off, Connie walked to the ocean, and the cold water rushed between her toes. With one more step, she leaned over the salty water, hoping the sting of the ocean would mend her injured hand. That was when she lost her balance and down she went with the waves rushing over her head. I heard her yell and panicked, knowing I couldn't lift her, and the only person nearby was a thin man who appeared to be suffering from an ailment. I ran toward her, but Connie yelled, "Get back!" Kentucky Color: A Walkingstick and a Walking Stick By Billy Joe Fudge The Common Walkingstick, sometimes referred to as the Northern Walkingstick is one of the most feared insects in our culture. Great Wooded South folklore has spawned horror stories about Walkingsticks spitting blood or poison or being capable of deadly stings. I must admit they are very intimidating looking because of their six inch body length and wide six-legged stance! The reality is that they are indeed harmless because of the fact that they only eat the green, chlorophyll ladened meaty areas of some tree leaves and yes, I know you are probably counting legs right now in preparation to question my math skills. This one only has five legs because it has lost the lower right leg. They have the ability to shed a leg or two to allow a hungry bird to get away with only a leg leaving them to carry on. They can however, regrow the lost legs during one of their four or five annual molts. Mmmm-hmmm, I'm still reading your mind for you are right now thinking, "Billy Joe has done gone to imagining things cause there ain't but three legs on that ol' Walkingstick!" What you might not know is that Walkingsticks will reach forward with their front pair of legs making themselves look about a third bigger than they really are. Also, I am not forgetting to explain that the second walking stick is probably the most famous walking stick in the Great Wooded South. It has been a stabilizing force in my life for about 20 years. If I'm in the woods, this split tobacco stick all dressed up with a leather hand grip and leather wrist loop is literally by my side every step I take. The handgrip cuts down on blisters and the wrist loop keeps me from losing the walking stick over a bluff or over a river bank. 2025-10-19 13:38:55 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Kentucky Color by Billy Joe Fudge

Hay located for Pumpkin Trail By Vicky Pike Thank you to Jimmy Bennett for coming to Miss Bridget Comptons rescue when she was in need of hay to display the pumpkins at the Pumpkin Trail at the Jim Blair Center. I knew some of our farmers would have some that could be used for decoration instead of feed. We appreciate Jimmy's generous donation. 2025-10-19 12:19:12 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback Birthdays and Anniversaries for October 19 Happy Anniversary, Katie and Kent Boyce (2012) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Terry and Kathy Goodin (1974) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Ann Smith (1967) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Garry Cox | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Jane Branham | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Jeana Collins Pike (1972) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Kim Kelley Dykes | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Lynn Kilgallen | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Margaret Antle | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Michael Mitchum | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Miller Quinn (2006) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Ricky Roy | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Lee Roy Bennett (1945) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Arlin Downey, Greensburg, KY; Adair Co. native (1938) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Mark Allan Stafford, Casey Co., KY (1958) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Mr. Holland Moss Milby, Green County, KY (1933) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Ardis R.
