Epicurean Kentuckian: Pawpaw harvest

2025-09-08 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
A small harvest of pawpaws, gifted from a friend. These "Kentucky Bananas" seem a little smaller than the ones that I remember growing behind Audrey Waggener's house atop Jamestown Hill in the late 1970s, but it's possible that those trees, like her abundant tomato plants, just understood what was expected of them and produced accordingly.

Kentucky State University (KSU) has the only full-time pawpaw research program in the world; it was started in 1990 with the aim of developing pawpaw as a new tree-fruit crop for Kentucky. Pawpaw is the largest edible native fruit in North America and has very few diseases compared to other orchard crops. (Wikipedia).

Carol Perkins: Three Dog Night

Previous Column: Drop the Kleenex

By Carol Perkins

I spent my birthday in Huntsville at my friend Mary Alice's home. Connie Scott (art teacher) and I drove down on Saturday, and then the three of us attended a Three Dog Night concert, with the opening act The Little River Band. We were so far from the stage that we couldn't tell who the lead singer was for either. I pulled up a picture of Three Dog Night, and Danny Hutton is the only original left. Twenty-four members have come and gone, so the band, other than Danny, was more like a tribute band. I recognized a few songs before "Joy to the World" ended the night and brought us to our feet.

Mary Alice was wise enough to buy two extra tickets for her son, Daniel, and his wife, Lori, so they could help navigate. The main parking lot was full by the time we arrived, so Daniel pulled up to the crew at the closed area and stumbled on his words to describe us without being too pointed, "I have some challenged ladies here. Can I drop them off?"

Green River Band concert to highlight LWU Family Weekend

By Duane Bonifer

This year's Lindsey Wilson University Family Weekend will be a celebration of the community as well as the university. During Lindsey Wilson's 2025 Family Weekend, which will be September 12-13, 2025, campus visitors are encouraged to enjoy the weekend in Columbia-Adair County as much as they do on campus.

"We want our campus visitors to celebrate the weekend with their students on campus as well as out in our surrounding community," said Lindsey Wilson Director of Student Activities Stephanie Blackwood. "Lindsey Wilson enjoys great support from the local community, and we want our campus guests to discover the many great businesses and things to do right here in Columbia-Adair County."

Family Weekend will get underway right after the conclusion of Lindsey Wilson University Week, a five-day celebration of the university from September 8-12, 2025, by the Columbia-Adair County governments.

Family Weekend's highlight on campus will be a concert by the Green River Band. The concert -- which is free and open to the public -- will be from 8pmCT to 10pmCT on Friday, September 12, 2025, on The Quad.
