Weekend travel in the Blue Ridge Mountains

By Josh Brockman

Recent weekend travel took us five hours from Columbia to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway in North Carolina. The mountains are part of the great Appalachian range.

We stayed in a little cozy lodge in the small community of Pineola which was hit hard by the massive flooding last year and evidence of that was still visible.

We hiked Grandfather Mountain toward Calloway Peak. The trail honestly was the most challenging I've done and it will definitely get the heart rate up.

No age limit on recovery: The Support Agency leads the way

The Support Agency, which is committed to fighting ageism and transforming attitudes about aging, was awarded a grant earlier this year by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky to confront stigma around substance use disorder (SUD), particularly in older adults. Over the last six months, the agency has rolled out educational programs across the community to foster understanding and empathy.

According to Kentucky's 2024 Drug Overdose Fatality Report, all age groups saw a decline in overdose deaths except for one: adults ages 75-84, which showed an increase. This signals a rising risk among older Kentuckians.

Dr. Lynda Wilkerson, Executive Director of The Support Agency, says the program is beginning to make a difference by doing the following:

KSP: Raywick firefighters injured when tanker overturns

From Trooper Jonathan Houk

Lebanon, KY - Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers responded to a single-vehicle injury collision on KY 527 (Saint Francis Raywick Road) in Marion County on August 22, 2025, at 5:17pmET.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Brian Hatt, 51, of Raywick, was traveling north on KY 537 in a Raywick Fire Department 2008 International tanker truck. Football: Indians fall to Lakers in home opener

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Friday, August 22, 2025 the Adair County Indians opened up their football season against the Russell County Lakers. The game was played at the Indians temporary home away from home, Parnell Family Stadium. The Tribe fell to the Lakers 32-9 in a game that saw the Indians pretty well handled by the Lakers on both sides of the ball.

All in all, this was not the start to the season the Indians had hoped for, but there is plenty to learn and improve on heading into next week's matchup against Metcalfe County (0-1), which will also be hosted at Parnell Family Stadium.

LWU Community challenges Class of 2029 to make history

By Duane Bonifer

The first class of Lindsey Wilson University students was welcomed to campus on Saturday, August 23, 2025, and there were a lot of students to welcome.

The final count will not be known until the end of August, but Lindsey Wilson's first class of freshmen and new students as a university will exceed 500, making it one of the largest classes of undergraduate students in school history.

Members of the Class of 2029 were urged by members of the Lindsey Wilson community to make more history.

"Your class, the Class of 2029, will accomplish amazing things," Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. told the freshmen and new students gathered for the kickoff ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 23, in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center. "You will travel across this country together, and other countries as well. You will sing and act and dance and make music together. You will feed the homeless, visit the elderly and teach children together. You will laugh, you will cry, you will grieve and you will celebrate together. You will win national championships together. And you will experience what it feels like to hold that Highway 55 sign (the traveling trophy awarded in the Lindsey Wilson-Campbellsville University rivalry football game) in your hands together."

Luckey also encouraged the new students to look out for one another.

"Love each other and take care of each other, because that's what family is supposed to do," he said.
