An aerial view of a smoke

2025-08-23 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
Billy Joe says, "A Great Wooded South smoke similar to many thousands I found, sized up, and often ended up working on during the night after fire patrol ended. A Forest Ranger's day was often long and unrelenting! The longest I ever worked continuously was 43 hours. It was against policy then as it still is today but a good soldier finishes the job!"

First un-recruited hummingbird stops by for a visit

By Linda Waggener

If only I'd seen Veronica Arnold's picture before the first sighting of a hummingbird in the yard, I could have been a better host - I'd have known it just needed a shower!

Hummingbirds have always fascinated me but I've never put out the food they are known to like and never had expectations they'd stop by. Also I have cats that would be a threat so I don't recruit birds to that area of the yard.

Today, for the first time here, I looked up and saw a little hummingbird very close by, hovering, observing. If one comes by again before it rains, I'll turn on the garden sprinkler.

Great Wooded South: A Bright Streak of Light

Click here for all the entries in the Great Wooded South series

By Billy Joe Fudge

While on aerial fire patrol one clear and calm sunshiny day, we had made a turn toward the East at Cyclone near the Metcalfe and Monroe County boundary. It was a relatively calm day beneath a brilliantly blue Autumn sky.

As usual, I was sitting on the right side of the plane with the pilot on my left. Many spotters liked to sit in the back seat but the back seat did not work for me. There were three reasons I liked the front seat better.

First, I always figured that seeing where I was going was a very important criteria for survival.

Second, while I was busy with maps and the radio I could communicate with the pilot with hand signals.

Last, and most importantly, should the pilot become incapacitated for any reason, it was my responsibility to safely get us back on the ground.

I had one pilot who had suffered a heart attack in the past. The first day or so of us flying together, he asked if I could land his plane if need be.
