Governor announces ban on bromazolam From Scottie Ellis Frankfort, KY - On August 18, 2025, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the emergency designation of bromazolam as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, banning the drug from being sold in Kentucky and providing law enforcement the ability to make arrests for sales or possession. The action comes after bromazolam, widely known as "designer Xanax," has been tied to a growing number of fatal overdoses in the commonwealth and across the nation. It was detected in 48 overdose deaths in Kentucky in 2024. "Team Kentucky has made important progress in our fight against addiction, with three-straight years of declines in overdose deaths, and we're committed to ensuring that work continues," Gov. Beshear said. "This deadly drug has no place in our communities, and now we have the tools needed to get it off the streets and protect more lives." The classification of bromazolam as a Schedule 1 controlled substance took immediate effect following the Governor's emergency regulation. Gov. Beshear's decision came after a request by Attorney General Russell Coleman. Letter: Limits on things Joyce M. Coomer writes: I see burn bans posted when there has been little rain for extended periods of time. Why do I not see bans on watering lawns? The last time I checked, a lush green lawn wasn't a necessity for human life. However, if I should need emergency surgery, I sure would like for the doctor to have water so he could wash his hands before performing surgery.Comments re: Burn ban declared by Mayor of Edmonton 2025-08-18 20:52:14 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
LWU Theatre: Encore Performances of Shiloh Rules Aug 28-29 From Duane Bonifer Audience members who attend one of the two upcoming encore performances of Shiloh Rules will be treated to a short pre-performance concert. The Lindsey Wilson University Department of Theatre will present "Shiloh Rules," by Doris Baizley, at 7pmCT August 28-29, 2025, with a 15-minute pre-play concert to begin around 6:30pmCT. The performance is directed by Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock, and the cast is: Zoe Boatright '28 of Columbia (LucyGale Scruggs); Mayatu Brown '27 of Columbia (Ranger Wilson); Shiane Lussier '26 of Bremen, Kentucky (Widow Beckwith); Kayla Koerner '24 of Columbia (Mrs. Cecilia Delaunay Pettison); Kassidy Phelps of Burkesville, Kentucky (Miss Clara May Abbott); Sabrina Ruiz '26 of Louisville, Kentucky (Meg Barton); and stage manager Leeshawn Johnson '26 of Louisville. To purchase tickets, go to theatrefest.org or contact the Lindsey Wilson Theatre Department at theatre@lindsey.edu or 270-384-8044. Although Shiloh Rules is about a re-enactment of the Civil War battle that goes awry, the 15-minute pre-play concert, which will begin about 30 minutes before the start of the play, will include selections of recent popular music that spans from the Beatles to Andy Grammer. While the songs might not have a direct connection to the Civil War or the battle fought April 6-7, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee, the musical selections play an important role in preparing the audience for the production. "It's a good way to loosen up the audience and get them ready for the play," said Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock, who directs Shiloh Rules. "It's almost like an opening act at a rock concert." Little League Basketball season approaching From Daniel Hedges I am pleased to announce some planned improvements to make this program better this year. I do have a cheer director now. It was a quick and numerous response. We will need coaches for our basketball teams when the season arrives. The biggest issue last year was unbalanced teams in one division especially. I felt horrible and anyone who peddled the fact I has a vested interest in doing this was blatantly wrong. This year we will have evaluation evenings with the high school basketball staff and create groupings. I also have a couple of consultants to inform me on skill levels. I will use this information to create more balanced teams. With this said, I cannot honor everyone's request for a certain coach. These requests led to some of the balance issues with teams last year. It can't be both ways. We are working on getting hanging goals on the regular goals for the different age divisions and eliminating the mobile goals we used for the smallest division. With enough interest, I plan on offering the league for students with disabilities again. Signups, evals, etc will come in September. We plan to require bands this year to assist with man-to-man defense. Thank you and I look forward to a good season. 2025-08-18 14:16:01 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sports

Waterfowl hunting blind drawing dates set for four WMAs Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has scheduled dates for public drawings to select season-long waterfowl hunting blind sites at four wildlife management areas this fall. Available sites include locations at Lake Barkley, Green River Lake, Barren River Lake and Doug Travis wildlife management areas (WMAs). Each area has numerous sites available, and multiple hunters can be selected for each location. Seasonally drawn blind sites ensure that selected waterfowl hunters will have a place to hunt during the entire waterfowl season. The drawings for these seasonally drawn blinds take place well before the season to allow hunters time to build blinds and make all necessary plans for the season. Upcoming season-long blind drawings include: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2025-08-18 14:08:09 | Comments | Printable version
Benjamin Tracy Franklin, 75, Russell County, KY Benjamin Tracy Franklin, of Jamestown, passed away on August 17, 2025, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was 75 years of age. Born May 28, 1950, in Jamestown, to the late Hershel and Elizabeth Chapman Franklin, he was a carpenter and farmer, but most importantly, he was a man devoted to his family. Benjamin was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, but his favorite title was "Papa." He often bragged about his ten grandchildren, and his eleven-and-counting great grandchildren. Benjamin found joy in simple pleasures like sitting around with friends and family telling stories, aggravating those he loved most, sharing laughter with everyone around him, and of course, spoiling his grandbabies. Lindsey Wilson University staff prepares for Blue Raider wave By Duane Bonifer After a busy summer on campus and beyond, the pace of life at Lindsey Wilson University is about to go from harried to hectic this weekend. And the Lindsey Wilson Dean of Students' office couldn't be happier. "It's a pretty exciting time," said Lindsey Wilson Dean of Students Chris Schmidt, who will begin his 31st Lindsey Wilson school year. "It's an incredible time because it's the start of a new chapter in our students' lives. The excitement of people chasing their dreams never gets old." Students have been returning to campus since August 4, when students who play on a fall sports team started to arrive in Columbia, followed by students who work in residence life. But this weekend, the steady stream of returning students will become a flood of Blue Raiders. Returning students will be back on campus on Friday, August 22; the big day will be on Saturday, August 23, 2025, when the remainder of the more than 500 new students will check in.
