Safety and Health award given to Sumitomo Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, Edmonton, was one of 49 employers in the state to be recognized for excellence in workplace safety and health. Recognition was given at the annual Governor’s Safety and Health Conference and Exposition in Owensboro last week. Sumitomo worked 8,398,500 hours without experiencing a workplace injury accident or illness resulting in lost time. Great Wooded South: My Hippie Click here for all of this Great Wooded South series By Billy Joe Fudge In my early days as a spotter, about all the towers were manned, and much of our time was spent checking smokes that they had seen and reported. We could save a lot of unnecessary travel for the Rangers, and, as I mentioned earlier, our bird's-eye view size-up was invaluable to them. We spent much time interacting with those manning the towers. The pilot and I knew most of them by name because of many conversations we had with them, and we had heard them having many, many conversations with other towers as well. Additionally, each County Ranger hired and managed the work of those manning the towers in his county. Since all our Rangers brought all their reports into our district office at Campbellsville twice a month, I heard all their stories about the life and times of this diverse array of humanity scattered across the sixteen counties of the South Central District, the heart of the Great Wooded South. One of those stories was from a Ranger about the young lady he referred to as "My Hippie"! She worked as a spotter in one of his towers for a couple of years. Back-to-School Pool Party at Holloway Health & Wellness Center By Duane Bonifer Jonathan Cross knew what his family was going to do Saturday afternoon as soon as his children heard the word "swimming pool" associated with the WAIN Back-to-School Pool Party. The event's corporate sponsors included JL Gate, T.J. Regional Health and Franklin Nissan. Cross and his wife, Kim, brought their children Lexi, 14, Jaden, 13, Skylar, 10, and Jackson, 6, to the Lindsey Wilson University Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center for the annual WAIN Back-to-School Pool Party. "They love the pool," said Cross. "We've been here before for basketball games, but we've never been here to swim. When the kids heard that the pool was going to be open for this, they wanted to come and swim." The three-hour free event held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, attracted more than 200 area schoolchildren and their family members so they could also swim in the pools, as well as prepare for and celebrate the start of the 2025-26 school year.
