Robert Palmer has big plans for the Blue Raiders Band By Shelby Burton The Lindsey Wilson University Blue Raider Band is entering an exciting new chapter under the leadership of its new director, Robert Palmer. "Sometimes when a program needs to reinvent itself, it's OK to completely start over," Palmer, the Lindsey Wilson director of bands, told a group of students, faculty and community members at an August 1, 2025, reception in the updated Blue Raider Band Building. "What's most important to me as your band director is giving you the opportunity for a great experience -- one that includes campus involvement, community involvement, traveling, exciting shows and, most importantly, making sure your voice as a student is heard." The August 1 event highlighted several upgrades Palmer has already made to the program since taking over less than a month ago -- a reorganized uniform closet, a renovated music library and copy room, and the addition of a recording studio. Palmer said those changes are just the beginning. "I've been a band kid my whole life," said Palmer. "Band is not an 'I' program. It's a 'we' event. A successful band program is one where students are having a great experience, making great music and creating lasting memories." Palmer said he wants students to help shape the band's direction, from choosing show themes to suggesting ways the ensemble can engage with the Columbia-Adair County community. He also emphasized the importance of service and outreach. All Adair students to receive free breakfast and lunch From the Adair County Food Service Program Every student eats breakfast and lunch at no charge all year! The Adair County Food Service Program is participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) that allows all students to receive free breakfast and free lunch for the 2025-2026 school year. Your child's participation in breakfast and lunch will be essential to continue to offer all school meals free for our children. All students must take the required food components to make a reimbursable meal or they will have to pay for each item and will not qualify for a free meal. Your child may continue to purchase extra food items or a la carte items at a set price. Board Policy states that students are not allowed to charge extra food items, so please inform your child of this policy, as cashiers will not allow charging of any items, with no exceptions. For your convenience, use My School Bucks to deposit money into your child's lunch/breakfast account and erase the agony of lost money for these items. Antioch Church to celebrate 160 years in September 2025 From Judy Reliford Antioch began around 225 years ago when a group of people who believed in Christ meet as a congregation at a location that became known as "The Antioch Meeting Place" in the Sparksville community of Adair County, Kentucky. In 1865 (160 years ago), the first church was built on the present location. In 1945, the present building replaced the original building at the same location. The 1945 sanctuary remained much the same as it was when first built. There were Sunday School rooms added around 20 years later. A fellowship hall was added years later, and in 2016, the sanctuary was remodeled. The 160 Year Celebration will be at Antioch Church on Sunday, September 7, 2025, with a morning service beginning at 10amCT, with a meal to follow around NoonCT. Anyone with ties to Antioch as well as others interested in this event are invited to join us. This milestone event will include worship, fellowship, and sharing many precious memories. Join us as we honor our history and look forward to the future together! Antioch Church is located at 3324 Wheeler Hill Rd., Columbia, KY. Mary Louise Scott, 79, Adair Co., KY (1946-2025) Mary Louise (Montgomery) Scott of the Bennett Ridge community in Adair County died on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at TJ Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. She was 79 years old. The funeral service will be held at 2pmCT on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Rusty Brown officiating.
