The Ghost of Bill the Cat

By Pen

I had the pleasure of a photo walk with renowned CM contributing photographer Robert Ellis at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill this past weekend.

They were hosting their annual craft show, which "boasts an assortment of crafts, including exceptional pottery, jewelry, glassware, woven rugs, needlecraft, basketry, leather goods, floral design and Shaker reproductions." The weather broke perfectly for the show, with blue skies and unusually pleasant temperatures for the start of August.

Robert has participated as a vendor in the show for many years, selling his unique wooden cutting boards and other creations. He has moved on to Vendor Emeritus status these days, enjoying the time to chat with all the vendors he knows and doing some serious "people watching" with his camera. You can see photos from Robert's previous outing at Shaker Village here: Shaker Village travel photos by Robert Ellis, and we hope to have one or two from Saturday, soon.

While walking the Garden, Robert and I had stopped to talk to one of the staff tilling rows with an old fashioned hand-plow when I spotted a cat walking purposefully my way through the barn. The cat bore a more-than-passing resemblance to the late Ed Waggener's beloved Bill the Cat, and I tried to grab a few photos.

Once I got back home, I searched the CM Archives to double-check my memory, and found just a single photo of the illustrious Bill, in grainy antique-digital black and white, and from before the turn of the Century. However, that photo was attached to one of my favorite Around Adair columns, The Great Tupman's Pond Catventure.

There's a lot going on in that tale, but this quote is a decent appetizer: "You can't be real sure when Charles Barnes tells you somebody needs 24 cats."

I'm pretty sure the Ghost of Bill was telling me to re-visit it, and you can give it a read at this link:
