Carol Perkins: The Piano Previous Column: Forever and Ever, Amen By Carol Perkins If you've ever looked at a piano and thought, "That doesn't look complicated," you're a total optimist or a natural musician. For people like me, who spent fifty cents weekly for years with Ms. Lasca Martin, trying to learn to play, only wanting to slam the lid down and run away at the end of each session, you'll understand when I finally surrendered to my lack of talent. After all the time I spent on her piano bench, I couldn't fight the battle between my fingers and my brain. Even when my mother always insisted I could play if I practiced. When Guy and I got married, I wanted to bring my secondhand piano to our new home. Anyone who's ever tried to move one will tell you it becomes a tyrant---heavy, stubborn, and the enemy.
