Raccoons are everywhere this season

2025-07-31 - Photo by Graham Waggener.
This Raccoon was probably thinking he'd really like to come in - climb through the kitchen window, sniff out the sink and dishes and enjoy any leftovers from dinner. Photographer Graham Waggener said no, but had to take a picture of the earnest face looking in his window.

To all the contributors - thank you from Alan, Lois and me

By Linda Waggener

This week's Carol Perkins article, Forever and Ever Amen, is one I especially loved because I'm always, always talking about the weather.

Radio wizard Alan Reed, formerly of this place now of Nashville, corresponded recently and said to "be sure and tell that girl who always writes on CM from Edmonton that she sure is good." I agree with Alan, Carol Perkins sure is a good writer!

On that same note, good friend Lois Wilson, just before her recent passing, called to say she loved all those writers and photographers who contribute regularly to Columbia Magazine, including Carol. In addition, Lois mentioned Pen Waggener's birds, Billy Joe Fudge's Great Wooded South, Tommy Bailey's sunsets, Robert Ellis's travel pictures and descriptions, and several others. My thanks to all these and to all the readers and writers and photographers who make up 25 years of CM archives. Thank you so much for keeping in touch.

Pink Floyd show returns to Hardin Planetarium

From Chris Chandler

Hardin Planetarium is hosting the planetarium show "Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon:' 50 Years in a Heartbeat" every Friday night at 6pmCT and 8pmCT, through mid-July 2026. The show requires tickets, available on the planetarium's website at www.wku.edu/planetarium, and is also offered at the same times on many Saturdays.

"This is the same show we offered in 2023, which sold out nearly every showing. Experiencing this album with other fans, in a planetarium with full-dome simulations that convey themes of the album can be a real eye-opener," Planetarium Specialist Chris Chandler explained.

The show is offered as a fundraiser in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of WKU Ogden College of Science and Engineering and in preparation for the planetarium's 60th anniversary in 2027.

Grants to clean up illegal open dumps, litter

From Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY- Applications are now being accepted for grants that will help protect the health and safety of local communities and the beauty of the commonwealth's natural resources. The two signature programs provide funds for the cleanup of illegal open dumps and the removal of litter along public roads.

"These two successful programs honor our commitment for a better Kentucky by restoring the natural environment, reducing pollution and protecting local ecosystems," said Rebecca Goodman, secretary of the Energy and Environment Cabinet. "The Illegal Open Dump Grant has funded the cleanup of nearly 3,000 dump sites since 2006 and the Litter Abatement Grant has assisted every county in maintaining the scenic beauty of our roadways."

The grants are awarded based on a county's road miles, rural population and total population. Counties may request specific amounts for an illegal open dump cleanup grant based on the estimated dump costs.
