Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced on Thursday, May 29, 2025, that the state will accept applications for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) from individuals in six counties who are out of work as a result of severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes that occurred in Kentucky on May 16-17, 2025.

The Governor will request that additional designations and counties be added to the declaration through an amendment as ongoing assessments are completed.

Carol Perkins: Then There Were Two

Previous Column: Sentimental Journey

By Carol Perkins

Every Memorial Day is a time of remembering. Although my thoughts go to my lost friends every day, this time of the year is especially difficult. There were four of us who were friends from the cradle. One was my first cousin, Roberta, who lived next door. Another was Judy, Roberta's aunt, who was a year younger and was no relation to me, and Connie, who wasn't related to any of us. She didn't know to whom she was related until she was an adult. I wrote her story in A Girl Named Connie.

Connie, Roberta, and I spent twelve school years with the same teachers, even in high school. Connie, the tomboy, took Home Economics classes because officials wouldn't let her take her shop classes. She longed for an FFA jacket. We grew up together, walked through adulthood together, and then life happened.

Letter: Proud to be a member of this community

Troy Grider writes:
This is a wonderful but tragic story. Bradley was an extraordinary person, and it is sad that he is now gone too soon. But, I love this story of Mr. Parnell and Mr. Faulkner going to great lengths to make this graduation happen for Grant with his father able to be in attendance only hours/days from his death.

I am thankful for the compassion, thoughtfulness, and care exhibited by both our high school principal and our superintendent to provide a precious memory/moment for this family during their tragedy! It reminds me of how all of us as community members should love each other and show kindness every time opportunity knocks and to look for moments to randomly do good to others. I promise you that showing the love and compassion, as Jesus taught us like this, will light a thousand fuses to explode a world of darkness and negative strongholds on our families, children, and fellow citizens/neighbors!!

I challenge each of us to show kindness, concern, and support rather than the opposite. I'm proud to be a member of this community who cares and shows up when it counts as I have seen now for all my life! Continued prayers for the Adamson family and congratulations to Mr. Grant!
Father allowed to be part of son's graduation

Kirkland-Lundy among 2025 Donate Life Scholarship recipients

Kentucky's Association of Circuit Court Clerks are proud to announce the winners of its statewide Donate Life Kentucky scholarship program, including Byron Kirkland-Lundy of Adair County. A new graduate of Metcalfe County High School, Kirkland-Lundy has signed a letter of intent to continue his education and football career at Lindsey Wilson College.

All 20 of these student leaders were selected for their passion, creativity, and commitment to the lifesaving mission of donation and transplantation. Twenty students across Kentucky were awarded $1,000 scholarships this year, totaling $20,000 in support for their outreach efforts.

"The students of today are tomorrow's advocates--and it's inspiring to see so many young Kentuckians use their voices for good," said Dennis Loy, Circuit Clerk of Adair County. "This scholarship is one way we continue this lifesaving mission education we began more than 30 years ago."

Baseball: Indians finish season with 23-11 record

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

Adair County High School Indians Baseball has concluded the season with a final record of 23-11, after a 4-10 loss to the Nelson County Cardinals in the 5th Region Tournament. In that game, the Indians were mainly held back by a poor offensive outing, with the team as a whole combining for just three hits and a batting average of .115 on the game.

Sophomores Alex Martin and Jasper Kemp were the only people to post hits for the Tribe, with Martin having a pair to lead the team. Three Indians took the mound, Brayton Coomer, Bryce Russell, and Issac Rodgers. Rodgers got the start and went two innings, giving up three hits, four runs, and walking two batters while being unable to strike out any on 46 pitches. Brayton Coomer contributed three innings of work from the mound, giving up four hits, four runs, walking two batters and striking out three batters on 50 pitches. Bryce Russell did one inning of work pitching, giving up a pair of hits and runs and not walking or striking out any batters on 20 pitches.

Overall, the Tribe had a very successful season, reaching the 5th Region Tournament for the first time since 2018. The success of this season is owed in large part to this year's seniors: Brody Brock, Brayton Coomer, Zane Gist, Jagger Kemp, Issac Rodgers, and Aiden Smith, all of which we at Columbia Magazine wish the best in their future.

Summer reading list by LWC Arts and Humanities faculty

From Duane Bonifer

Memorial Day is the unofficial marker of summer, and it's also when many turn their attention to a summer reading list to accompany them on vacation or while enjoying the longer hours of natural light.

Members of the Lindsey Wilson College School of Arts and Humanities faculty have assembled a diverse -- and verified -- list of authors and titles they either plan to read or recommend to anyone looking for summer reading recommendations. (Note: Click article title to see the full list)

Included in the list are one of this summer's big books, classics that you might have neglected or put off, murder mystery series, novels that were the basis for popular films, and a well-known author's lesser-known work. Regardless, there is more than enough to read long after the final coal in the grill has burned out and all of the fireworks have launched.
