Vietnam 1969 Tet Offensive: The Delta Dogs

An Infantry Company's Battles During the 1969 Tet Offensive

Veteran Ronnie Janes of Columbia is featured in a soldier's book detailing a two-month journey on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The Delta Dogs, written by Major George A. Durgin, U.S. Army, was authored in Vietnam in 1969, where a North Vietnamese prison camp was overrun by the Delta Dogs.

The book includes a detailed description along with over 80 photographs, illustrations, and maps. Major Durgin published the daily journal he kept in Vietnam because he wanted the friends and relatives of his fellow soldiers to understand how these young men met the challenges of being combat infantrymen - both those who were wounded and those who returned unscathed.

Decoration Day, now Memorial Day

By Mike Watson

Decoration Day in the United States was born out of the devastation of the Civil War. During this 'darkest of times' our nation suffered in every possible way. Millions sacrificed in various ways, more than half a million men and some women made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives to the cause. Even before the war ended there were some communities across the nation that paid tribute to these fallen by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. By 1868 the new-born custom of visiting the graves of the fallen had become something of a ritual, and grew with each passing year.

Several towns across the county, both Northern and Southern, claimed to be the first to honor the dead and the rightful birthplace of Decoration Day. All likely have a good claim. The first national Decoration Day was held in May 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery, attended by 5,000 who helped to decorate the graves of over 20,000 Civil War veterans. On that day, General James Garfield made a talk. This action prompted other events across the nation and by the turn of the century many communities celebrated this day.

May 30th came to be the semi-official Day of Remembrance in many locales. One reason for this date having been selected is that fresh flowers would be in abundance by this time in most areas. State legislatures proclaimed this date as the official date of observance in the late 1800s.

After the Great War, World War I, the date was expanded to honor all Americans who have died in war. Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an Act of Congress in 1971, and the date of observance placed on the last Monday in May.

Several Southern states, where the practice of decoration of Civil War graves is thought to have actually originated, continued to observe a separate day for Confederate dead, called Confederate Decoration Day.

The National Moment of Remembrance Act, passed by Congress in 2000 and signed by the President, encourages all Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence in remembrance and honor of those who have died in service to the nation.

Decoration Day or Memorial Day has become a general day of remembrance for all our dead. With the observance of the day more than a century ago, families began to decorate the graves of all their departed, whether veteran or not. Today we continue this observance. Southerners in particular make the pilgrimage to family cemeteries, often far from their current abode, to honor kinsmen with floral tributes and placement of flags for veterans. This day became a time of reunion for families and friends who, a century ago and since, may not have seen each other since the last observance.

God Bless those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in time of conflict.

Hunziger concludes LWC career at Mountain Laurel Festival

From Duane Bonifer

Pineville, KY - Sophia Hunziger put quite a bow on her Lindsey Wilson College career -- a pink-and-green one to be exact.

Hunziger graduated from Lindsey Wilson with a double major in psychology and human services and counseling on May 3, 2025, then headed north with her Blue Raider teammates to compete in the USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals, which were held May 16-17 in Lansing, MI.

After returning to campus to pack the contents of her residence hall room and move into an apartment in Lancaster, Ohio, Hunziger drove to the Cumberland Mountains, where she spent May 22-25, 2025, in Pineville, Kentucky, representing her alma mater in the 94th Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival. She was also the final Lindsey Wilson College representative sent to the Southeast Kentucky festival, as Lindsey Wilson will become Lindsey Wilson University on July 1, 2025.

Memorial Day poem: The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak

By George Kolbenschlag

This poem, by Archibald MacLeish, should speak to all of us and give us pause this Memorial Day. It is not a day of celebration, it's a time to remember the young (and not too young) men and women who gave their lives to keep this country a land where we can both celebrate the good times and, at other times, listen to those who can no longer speak.

As MacLeish says in his poem, These men and women have left us their deaths. We have to give their deaths their meaning.

The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak
By Archibald MacLeish
The young dead soldiers do not speak.
Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses:
who has not heard them?
They have a silence that speaks for them at night
and when the clock counts.
They say: We were young. We have died.
Remember us.
They say: We have done what we could
but until it is finished it is not done.
They say: We have given our lives but until it is finished
no one can know what our lives gave.
They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours,
they will mean what you make them.
They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for
peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say,
it is you who must say this.
We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning.
We were young, they say. We have died; remember us.

Carol Perkins: Sentimental Journey

Previous Column: Help me make it through the night

By Carol Perkins

In cleaning out my mother's house, I went on a Sentimental Journey.

Don't we all have things that are only treasures to us? My taps shoes from the 50s, letters from people I met at 4-H camp whose names I had forgotten, and stripes from my cheer uniform that was turned back to the school were among the few.

I found a letter Guy had written to my parents when he was in the Navy.

"Why would I have written them?" he said. Probably to butter them up!

Setting aside a lifetime of "stuff" is daunting. Guy's idea on the subject is to get a dumpster and throw it all away.

"Not before going through it!" I said.

From Daniel Wilson, Storm Alert Center

I hope you are enjoying the cool "Stump Winter!" The severe storm season is nearing an end for this spring, and what a spring it's been. Does it mean we won't have any more storms or even a severe storms this summer, absolutely not.

It just means that thanks to a normal strong low pressure system that stays around dominating in the summer months, the severe threat is lessened for the next several months.
