National Crappie League event coming to Green River in June

The National Crappie League (NCL) is coming to Holmes Bend for a Wild Card on June 6-7, 2025. Competitors will fish for cash, prizes, and an opportunity to qualify for the NCL National Championship.

There will be a two-day Semi-Pro Division tournament on June 6-7, 2025, open to all anglers/teams, regardless of previous earnings/placement, and a one-day tournament for amateur anglers on June 7, 2025.

A free Kids Rodeo will also be held on June 7, 2025. Registration is from 8amCT to 9amCT, and fishing is from 9amCT to 10:30amCT, at 5380 Holmes Bend Rd, Columbia, KY. This rodeo is for kids 12 and under, accompanied by a parent or guardian. Bring your pole and bait, and enjoy the fun and prizes.

2025 Veterans Banners to be dedicated on Friday

The City of Columbia will hold a dedication for the 2025 Veterans Banners at 10amCT on Friday, May 23, 2025, at City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY. Russell Lunsford with the local VFW will be the guest speaker.

This year Columbia will have close to 100 veterans banners up in the area immediately around and off the Public Square, representing veterans of World War II, the Vietnam War, Korean War, and those on active duty.

"We encourage the public to walk around and look at the banners representing the history of our community," said Mayor Hoots.

The public is invited to attend the dedication.

MacKenzie Minton honored as Distinguished Educator

Educators across WKU's service area have been honored as recipients of the 5th annual Distinguished Educator Awards! This initiative is dedicated to honoring the exemplary educators who serve as the foundation of Kentucky's educational system. These awards represent WKU's deep commitment to celebrating the outstanding contributions of current P-12 teachers across the Commonwealth--because there are never enough ways to say, "thank you."

This year's winners are:
  • Elementary - Marcia Sharp - Campbellsville Elementary
  • Middle - Melissa Embry - Daviess County Middle School
  • High - MacKenzie Minton - Adair County High School
  • Special Education - Sarah Dakin - Central Hardin High School
  • Literacy - Jennifer Coldiron - Hopkins Elementary School (Somerset)
  • PE/Health - Heather Baker-Rigney - Somerset High School
  • Visual and Performing Arts - Trisha Hall - Green County Primary School
  • Innovation - Ecil Miller - Glasgow Middle School
  • Belonging - Danielle Meade - Daviess County Middle School
  • Teacher Mentor - Sara Appleby - Daviess County Middle School
  • Principal - Kyle McGraw - Bowling Green High School
School districts across the region nominate standout educators each spring. Superintendents submit district-level nominations, which are then evaluated by a selection committee composed of faculty from WKU's School of Teacher Education.

Gladys Marie Walterham, 88, Adair Co. native (1937-2025)

Gladys Marie (Rowe) Walterham of Campbellsville died on Monday, May 19, 2025 at 5:45 P.M. at Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville. She was 88 years old.

The funeral service will be held at NoonCT on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Robert Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery.

Visitation is requested after 10amCT on Wednesday.

Class of 2025: Departmental and Achievement Awards

Members of the Adair County High School Class of 2025 were recognized for their achievements on Sunday afternoon, May 18, 2025, at the Senior Awards ceremony held in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, and officially presented with scholarship awards from numerous colleges, universities, businesses, and organizations.

Of the ACHS Class of 2025 graduates, 114 students earned Latin honors:
In addition, 60 students were presented with awards for achievements and honors from individual departments. Presenters included Sgt. James Young, Melanie Wrensch, Olivia Harmon, Cayce Davenport, Kelly Grant, Gabby Barnes, JR Thompson, Kayleigh Foster, Robyn Mantooth, Matthew Willis, Vanessa Burton, Jennifer Carter, Stacia Hill, Ashley Goodin, Christinia Watson, and Rebecca Cravens.

Smokey Bear coming to ACHD in June

The Adair County Health Department's Back to School Bash is June 27, and there is a special guest we just can't wait to announce.

Smokey Bear and the Kentucky Division of Forestry will be at the Adair County Health Department from 9amCT to NoonCT during the Bash on Friday, June 27, 2025. This will be a great opportunity to get your child's school-required immunizations. Several community partners will be there. It is a chance to learn more about their programs as well as LCDHD services. There will also be door prizes and giveaways.

The Adair Co. Health Department is located at 801 Wellness Way, Columbia, KY. Mark your calendar to bring your kids out to meet Smokey!

VBS starts June 2 at Freedom Separate Baptist Church

Freedom Separate Baptist Church will have Vacation Bible School from 6pmCT to 7pmCT nightly on June 2-6, 2025. The theme is "Fruits of the Spirit," and there will be classes for all ages, crafts, games, food, and fun.

Adair Co. Grand Jury May 15 indictments

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, the Adair County Circuit Court Grand Jury met and handed down indictments against 6 individuals from Columbia and Winchester, KY. Charges included possession, sexual abuse, unlawful transaction with a minor, distributing obscene material to minors, sodomy, criminal attempt to commit rape, assault, trafficking, strangulation, and wanton endangerment.

NOTE: Indictments are considered formal charges. An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding.

Boil Water Advisory lifted

According to representatives at Columbia Adair Utilities District, the Boil Water Advisory that was issued at 9:10am on 5/19/2025 for all consumers on 313-581 Oak Street, all of Boulder Lane, all of Ashley Court, all of Edna Drive, and all of Creekview Drive, has been lifted as of 5/20/2025.

Consumers no longer need to boil their water at those locations.

Memorial Day Program at VFW Post 6097 Columbia

VFW Post 6097 Columbia

The public is invited to the Memorial Day program at VFW Post 6097 Columbia beginning at 2pmCT at the Post located at 500 Greenhills Road, Columbia KY.

The program will begin in the hall, with a speaker who is a 101st Airborne veteran and retired postal carrier here in Columbia, former associate minister at Center Point Church in Burksville, who now ministers to all that need him. On top of all this, a really great guy -- come hear Neal Owsley.

Following the program inside the hall, we will move outside for the laying of the wreaths to honor our fallen comrades.

Hope to see you there to join us for this honoring.

Death ruled from use of generator during storms

05/18/25 -- The Russell Co Coroner's Office responded to the State Dock Saturday afternoon after a 911 call was received about an elderly female, possibly deceased. Upon arriving at the scene 93 y/o Debra K. Edelman of Richmond, IN was pronounced dead at 1649 hrs.

According to witnesses, all power was knocked out due to the storms that went through the area the night before. At some point the next morning, Mrs. Edelman asked a dock neighbor to turn on her generator to restore power.

The storms last Friday night into Saturday are on everyone's minds as cleanup continues and one consistent thought is gratitude for all the first responders, line workers, and street/public works crews who worked overnight and through the weekend to clear roads and restore order.

When you see a first responder this week, take an extra moment to say a heartfelt thank you!
