City of Columbia Police receives new Drone From Columbia City Hall The Columbia Police Department is happy to receive a new piece of equipment, in the way of a DJI Avata 2 drone to our department resources. This drone was anonymously donated by a supporter of our local community and law enforcement. The drone is the same make and model that is used by various other law enforcement agencies across the state, including the Kentucky State Police. Mary Christine Mitchell, 93, Green County, KY Mary Christine Mitchell, affectionately known as Christine to many, was born July 14, 1931 in Green County, KY to Robert Wilson Anderson and Flora Greene Penick Anderson. A longtime resident of Greensburg, KY, she spent her last years in Louisville where she passed at the Masonic Homes Kentucky on May 5, 2025 at the age of 93. She was the youngest of eight siblings (Bessie, Ruth, Louise, Jim, Carl, Lucian and Willie) and married to Thurman Leslie Mitchell, who all preceded her in death. When she was younger, Christine worked many years at the Fruit of the Loom Company where she retired in 1993. She professed a faith in Christ at an early age and was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Greensburg. There, she was an active member, engaged with vacation bible school and welcoming and hospitality committees. KY hosting events on May 17 for new permit applicants From Sherry Bray Frankfort, KY - Now that a new Kentucky law, House Bill 15, has taken effect allowing 15-year-olds to earn their driver's permits, Team Kentucky is hosting events across the state on Saturday, May 17, 2025, to help meet the increased interest from young Kentuckians wanting to apply for a permit. The state is offering more than 1,500 written permit test appointments at 20 testing locations across the state. Appointments will be released online at NoonCT on Friday, May 9, 2025, and applicants can select the time and location that best meets their schedule when accessing the portal online. Applicants can take the test in any county offered that day. These events will not include road skills or CDL testing. Applications open for SOAR Leadership Program From Nick Roy Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources The Step Out and Rise (SOAR) Program is a nine-month leadership development initiative sponsored by the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service and led by the Extension Agents. This program is designed to strengthen the leadership skills of current and future leaders, empowering them to make a greater impact in our community. The program runs from July 2025 through March 2026, with a graduation ceremony in April. Sessions occur monthly from 9 AM to 2 PM and provide participants with valuable insight into leadership, local government, economic development, and other key community topics. Each session will include a tour of a relevant local facility to enhance learning through real-world experiences. The participant cost is $100, which covers program materials and meals. Participants will be responsible for providing their own transportation to all tours, which will take place within the local area. To successfully complete the program, participants are required to attend a Fiscal Court meeting, a City Council meeting, and participate in a community service project. The application for SOAR can be downloaded at SOAR Application (PDF). Applications are due by June 20, 2025, and selected participants will be notified before the program begins. LWC Professor Hannah Coyt receives national award From Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson College counseling professor Hannah Coyt has always had a "passion to help." And she recently received a national award for her efforts over the years to strengthen and support the counseling profession. Coyt was given the Leadership Excellence for Counselors by Counselors Award from the National Board for Certified Counselors, the national organization for counselors. "I was just absolutely humbled by the award," said Coyt. "The reason it means so much to me is because I was nominated by fellow counselors in the field." Coyt was presented the award because of her professional work on the national level, including with the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, where she has contributed to that group's strategic planning and has led an emerging leaders program in the Southern United States. Youth Theatre Camp to be offered June 2-29 From Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson College is offering area youth a perfect way to kick off the summer months, and at a price that can't be beat. Lindsey Wilson College's IMAGINE! Youth Theatre -- a free summer youth program -- will be offered from June 2-29, 2025. Open to area youth from ages 8-18 and part of Lindsey Wilson's TheatreFest! Program, IMAGINE! Youth Theatre teaches participants about acting, stage makeup, and prop and set design and construction. It will meet from 8amCT toNoonCT Monday-Friday at the college. This year's IMAGINE! Youth Theatre will culminate with a production of Monica Flory's adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's classic collection of stories The Jungle Book. It will be presented by IMAGINE! Youth Theatre participants June 27-29, 2025, in the college's V.P. Henry Auditorium. IMAGINE! Students will be taught by theatre apprentices in the TheatreFest! City officials ask for cooperation on parking From Tiffany Collins City of Columbia, Kentucky It was brought up in Monday night's City Council meeting that there are continuing issues with parking on the square. We are requesting that businesses located on the square park in one of the city public parking lots. This has been a complaint with several people attempting to find parking on the immediate square. Garden Tour 2025: The Rose Garden By Linda Waggener The Julia Miller Horton Memorial Rose Garden is among the five stops on the Outdoor Home and Garden Tour coming up Sunday, May 18, 2025 from 1 to 4pmCT. The Rose Garden is in front of the historic Trabue Russell House, 201 Jamestown Street in Columbia. Dam Runner 5K is Saturday, May 10 The 11th Annual "I'm A Dam Runner" 5K Run/Walk at Green River Lake is coming up Saturday, May 10, 2025 on the USACE property. The race goes along the dam that creates Green River Lake, and is a closed course. It's an out and back, mostly flat, all paved, and offers views of the lake nearly the entire run. Portions of the funds from this race benefit The Friends of Green River Lake who work to support many efforts in recreation and conservation around Green River Lake.
