Sculpture by David Waltz at Highland Station Gallery

Highland Station Gallery's next Gallery Exhibition will feature the work of ceramic sculptor and potter David Waltz. Waltz creates three-dimensional clay sculptures, which are fired, and then pit-fired to create a weathered look. The clay is formed around a cardboard armature, sculpted in sections and then joined together using traditional pottery and sculpting tools. Waltz finds that his ideas come from many sources, often from daily experiences, photos, or travel to other countries.

Waltz also creates wheel-thrown functional pottery made from stoneware clay that is formed either on a potter's wheel or by hand. These pieces feature glazes that are non toxic and lead free. (More about Waltz on CM)

CM contributor George Kolbenschlag has said, "Waltz's work includes both realistic and whimsical pieces featuring people in various occupations and activities. His art is creative and thoughtful and often involves portrayal of common folks in common situations."

A "Meet The Artist" reception for Waltz's show, One Man's Sculptures, will be held from 4pmCT to 6pmCT on Thursday, May 1, 2025. The exhibition will run May 1, 2025 through May 10, 2025. The Gallery opens at 4pmCT Tuesdays through Fridays, and at 10amCT on Saturdays. A full schedule is available at highlandstationgallery.com.

LWC: Orpheus Literary Journal features 53 works of art, writing

Read the latest issue of Orpheus here: Orpheus-2025 (PDF, 13.4MB)

From Duane Bonifer

It might be difficult to find an overriding theme in the 26th edition of the Lindsey Wilson College literary journal Orpheus, but it will not be hard to find something to enjoy.

The latest edition of the student-edited journal, which spans 88 pages, features 53 pieces by 34 Lindsey Wilson students. The submissions include art -- photographs, drawings and paintings -- along with poems, fiction and creative nonfiction. The issue, which is available online, was released Monday, April 28, 2025, with a late-afternoon reading in the Thomas D. Clark Reading Room of Katie Murrell Library.

English faculty member Caleb Dempsey-Richardson, who has been the journal's faculty editor for the last four issues, said this issue of Orpheus is the "most well-balanced edition (he has overseen) in terms of representing both the visual arts and writing."

Examples of that balance can been seen in The Calm Before the Storm, a stunning picture by Alivia Stines '28 of Columbia; haunting poems by Zachariah Lawson '26 of Williamsburg, Kentucky, that recount struggles with his biological mother; "Mediations," a short essay by exchange student Yejun Choi of Busan, South Korea, on his efforts to deal with emotions; vivid drawings by Tezon Mitchell '27 of Campbellsville, Kentucky; and "Black, Buzzing, Beguiled Spot," a powerful short story by Morgan Bryant '26 of Shelbyville, Kentucky.
