CPD: Collision damages Southern Petroleum building By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO Columbia Police Department The Columbia Police Department investigated a single vehicle collision with property damage which began early Monday morning, December 5, 2022, near the intersection of Hudson Street and Burksville Street. The vehicle operator appeared to have lost control, damaging several utility lines before completely leaving the roadway and damaging fencing and building of Southern Petroleum on Burksville Street and coming to a stop. The party then fled on foot. While on scene, a male juvenile was brought to the scene by his father, who advised officers that his son had contacted him by phone wanting to be picked up in town. It was soon determined that the juvenile had taken the family vehicle without permission after sneaking out of the home. Huge crowd turns out for 31st annual Columbia Christmas parade Despite the bitter cold, a huge crowd turned out on Saturday evening, December 3, 2022, to see the largest-ever Columbia Christmas Parade. Every spot from the Parkway, all the way down Jamestown Street and around the Public Square in Columbia was filled with spectators there to see beautiful floats, plus lighted and decorated vehicles of all kinds, the ACHS ROTC, and the Adair Co. Marching Band. Local floats entering the parade to be judged included First Place winner TJ Health Columbia, Second Place winner Walker Realty, and Third Place winner Columbia Christian Church, in addition to Columbia Baptist Church, FCCLA, Church of the New Harvest, Free Union Separate Baptist Church, Adair Co. Schools Athletics, Adair Little League, Franklin Ford, Adair County FFA and many, many more. Grand Jury returns indictments On Thursday, November 10, 2022, the Adair County Circuit Court Grand Jury met and handed down indictments against 8 individuals on charges including flight, wanton endangerment, theft, fraud, menacing, criminal mischief, assault, public intoxication, possession, abuse and sodomy. NOTE: Indictments are considered formal charges. An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding. New tugboat launches for Turkey Neck Bend Ferry From Wes Watt The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) efforts to upgrade ferry operations in Monroe County recently hit a milestone as one of those upgrades was completed. Brand new tugboats were commissioned for the ferry on KY 214 at Turkey Neck Bend. One of those boats launched into service on November 30. The Turkey Neck Bend Ferry is the only State-owned and operated ferry. The operation runs 24 hours a day at no extra cost to motorists. The ferry service connects two sections of KY 214 at the Cumberland River and leads to the scenic section of Turkey Neck Bend in southeastern Monroe County. Campbellsville Christmas Parade a big success Saturday's Christmas Parade in downtown Campbellsville was host to an hour of floats, music, characters and classic cars, and organizer Larry Smith says that a record crowd came down to Main Street for the event. The annual parade was followed by the City of Campbellsville Open House at the Civic Center, with snacks, Santa, and holiday music from a handbell choir, choir and pianist. In addition, there was an ice-skating rink at Campbellsville University for all to enjoy. Time to apply for 2023 Rogers Explorers program From Sharon Dodson The Center for Rural Development is issuing a call to eighth-grade middle school students in Southern and Eastern Kentucky, including Adair and surrounding counties, to apply for the 2023 Rogers Explorers Program. To fill out an application for the 2023 Rogers Explorers Program, visit www.centeryouthprograms.com. The deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2023. There is no cost for students or their families to attend Rogers Explorers. KYTC expands scholarship program for civil engineers From Naitore Djigbenou Frankfort, KY - Building roads and bridges is synonymous with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), and so is the Cabinet's more than 70-year legacy of building Kentucky's future workforce of transportation leaders. KYTC is expanding its two civil engineering scholarship programs to now include a third construction management scholarship- all of which provide tuition assistance, hands-on experience and guaranteed employment after graduation. "This is a one-of-a-kind scholarship program that offers more than financial assistance but also practical experience to help students start a meaningful career that will help build a better Kentucky," said Gov. Power outages in the night due to vehicle accident 1:58amCT -- Residents in downtown Columbia have been experiencing recurring power outages that are due to light poles hit and damaged in a one vehicle accident. Sgt. Evan Burton reports that a juvenile is alleged to have taken the parents’ car and hit two power poles in the area of Burkesville Street between the Post Office and Five Star. Power is expected be affected for two or more hours.
