Letter: Remembering Don Franklin

Tony Jessee writes:
I remember that in 1971 I was on my way to work, and my old car broke down. I hitched a ride to work, then on my lunch break I walked down the street to Don's car lot.

I told him what had happened and that I was in need of a car to get back and forth to work. He said he would help me, and got me a car to drive. I said that I had no money but would return the next day and pay him. He said that would be ok. I will always remember how kind and helpful he was to me.

Letter: Randy Huckaby was pictured at FM2

Malinda Huckaby writes:
Not sure when this photo was taken or even if posted on Father's Day weekend. Brought back pleasant memories and yes, I cried.

Standing at booth is Randy Huckaby and daughter Amanda. He loved going to farmer's market with her!

Malinda, we're not sure when the photo was taken because it is from Farmers Market on the Square. We'll be happy to add that detail and more when someone writes in to let us know. Meanwhile, we miss Randy with you. - LW

Happy Father's Day! Today's dads are present and caring

A sincere Happy Father's Day to all of the dads in the Columbia Magazine family. The world will be a better place because of you and the capable children you are raising.

A wonderful thing has happened to fathers since the day of the "man in the gray flannel suit" in the 1950s and 1960s when kids were expected to be quiet, not bother Dad, and stay out of the way. It wasn't true of all dads, but it was for many. Their work was their primary interest and family was for the mothers. That's no longer true.

Letter: Thank you Phil Hanna

Prudence Hutchison Westholm writes:
Thank you, Phil Hanna, this is great! Obituaries are such a vital tool in researching family history.

I encourage everyone to remember this when writing the obituary of your deceased loved one. Please include the names of the parents of the deceased, plus include the names of both deceased and living siblings in the obituary.

The Find A Grave website is a super genealogical tool also.

Indeed, The Adair County Genealogy & History Research Center is a true gem of Adair County.

Morning Roll Call

A message from an Adair Co. Good Samaritan

It's an especially good idea to check up on friends, family and elderly neighbors during the weather we have had of late.

Although many times we are rushed and don't have the time to stop and chat, it only takes a second to ask them to send you a "thumbs up" in a message, (even if someone has limited Internet or phone knowledge, any emoji will do) and send them a thumbs up in return letting them know that you got their message and they are OK as of then.

If you don't get a thumbs up? You simply call to confirm that they are OK. Sometimes they forget to send the emoji, but that works as well because then they know this works!

If you happen to be checking on Grandma or Grandpa... try sending them a return heart or other emoji to brighten their day just let them know you care. Personally I've been doing this for six years and I've done it with many of my friends and neighbors as a quick check to make sure they were all right.
