Phillip Coffey - Pearl never missed spittoon

PEARL - By Phillip Coffey
She didn't need a huge spittoon but had a two-gallon wash pan - never a miss
Timing her rocking motion in her chair - streaming amber upward to ten feet
Targeting the hot ashes, cooling with her spit - steam lifting in the dark room
Discharged from the hot stove - warming passersby taking a reprieve from the cold.

Not once did she ever upset others with wetting the catalog - bought leather shoes
Of those standing nearby, sharing their discomfort(s) - yet never interrupting her
Regular job of making the phone connections between neighbors near Keltner-town.
Pearl is long gone but shows up often in my mother's memory with tales to share.
Pearl lived about a mile and a half from where I was born and 'raised cane'. Mom has told me many times about Pearl - her job and the rocking motion, snuff-spitting accuracy. - Phil

Recreation, tourism and sport management freshman Jbias Dawson from Springfield, Kentucky, left, and psychology sophomore Jerome Jones from Savannah, Georgia take part in the LWC's first-ever Multicultural Retreat on Saturday, Feb. 26.

Dubbed "Breaking Down Barriers" more than 50 members of the LWC community attended the retreat that included icebreakers, special presentations, an open forum and breakout sessions allowing participants to talk openly and ask questions about race, equity, inclusion, discrimination and systemic cultural beliefs.

James Allen Biggs, 80, Columbia, KY native (1941-2022)

James Allen Biggs of Campbellsville passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at home. He was 80 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 1pmET on Monday, February 28, 2022, at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home, 418 Lebanon Ave., Campbellsville, KY, officiated by Rev. Lanny Garner and Rev. Tony Franklin. Entombment will follow in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Visitation is requested from 5pmET until 8pmET on Sunday, February 27, 2022.

Retired Teachers Meeting Tue March 8, 2022

The Adair County Retired Teachers Association will meet at 4pmCT on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, in the Columbia Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 201 Greensburg St, Columbia, KY. We are meeting at this time to accommodate retired teachers that substitute teach in Adair County.

During the meeting retired educators will be updated on the most recent legislative information impacting the retired teachers of Adair County. We will also recognize teachers that have retired since our last meeting.

Individuals can pay their $10 annual dues.

A collection of food pantry supplies, school supplies, and monetary donations will be accepted at the meeting.

Cordie Hayes, 85, Liberty, KY (1936-2022)

Cordie Hayes of Liberty passed away on Friday February 25, 2022, at the Casey County Hospital. She was 85 years old.

Funeral Services will be held at 1pmET on Monday February 28, 2022, at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel, 142 KY Hwy 49, Liberty, KY, with Bro. Don Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch at Creston Cemetery.
