Plenty of the new games in stock

2022-02-18 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
I happened to be shopping when the crew was breaking out the new game with a local theme - ColumbiaOpoly. Gabe Neat, at left, and David Jessie were bringing in a load of them for shelves. When I spent time with my granddaughters recently we played and it's a lot of fun to compete for property as you buy up the town. -- LW

Senate bill would create standards for teaching key civics topics

By Nancy Royden, LRC

Frankfort, KY - Legislation that calls on public schools to teach certain concepts and historical documents - ones that supporters say are central to American principles - cleared the Senate Education Committee on Thursday.

Senate Bill 138 says schools must provide instruction in social studies that aligns with a list of concepts such as "all individuals are created equal" and "Americans are entitled to equal protection under the law," among several others.

It also calls for topics on public policy or social affairs to be taught with consideration of the students' age and for educators to incorporate two dozen core documents from American history into lessons.

Carol Perkins: Just Like That

Previous Column: Hip Hop

By Carol Perkins

I heard it as clearly as if limbs were snapping off a tree. A cold chill, fear, and excruciating pain followed. I wasn't sure what was broken, but my leg was dangling loose and lifeless. Only two days after my hip surgery, I was getting in my SUV to go to my first physical therapy session when I must have put too much pressure on my hip surgery side and the femur broke.

When Guy lowered me to the step, I called my surgeon's office and would head back for what would be a second surgery. Guy backed his car into the garage and with the help of the ambulance service, they got me loaded. I didn't fall; I didn't trip. I merely lifted my leg to get in the truck. "Soft bones" was the answer to this rare event. I would not be able to put any weight on the legs for at least three weeks, slowing down my hip replacement progress.

When trauma hits the body, a multitude of reactions follows.

Our family would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude for the outpouring of love shown during the passing of David (Dad).

The amount of calls, texts, cards, meals, and visits we have received is a testament to the life he lived.

A special thank you goes to the extraordinary care David (Dad) received at both TJ Health Columbia and Signature Health (Summit Manor). Also, a huge thanks to the staff at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home. The staff of each showed us such kindness and compassion during our most difficult days.

CU: Richardson speaks for Black History Month

By Daisy Rodriguez

Campbellsville, KY -. - The Rev. Montel Richardson, pastor of First Baptist Church in Campbellsville, spoke about remembering pain for Black History Month, at Campbellsville University's chapel recently.

Richardson read from Psalm 137:1-4. By the rivers of Babylon, we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. There on the poplars we hung our harps, for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, 'Sing us one of the songs of Zion!' How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land?'

KTC reminder: Permit required for signs in right of way

By Chris Jessie

Elizabethtown, KY - Illegally placed items along state maintained right of way areas are subject to being removed. Political campaigns, residents, business operators and property owners along US and KY routes are reminded no signage is allowed on right of way other than official highway signs and items approved through a permit process. Non-permitted signs can create additional hazards by blocking sight distance or distracting drivers, particularly at intersections.

Requests have been received to clear non-permitted signs from right of way areas across the district. With May Primary races and the traditional yard sale season coming up, anyone wanting to place such signage must do so beyond roadway right of way limits. This also includes all yard sale activities and associated parking.
