Willie Francis Carter, 82, Burkesville, KY (1940-2021) Mrs. Willie Francis (Pruitt) Carter of Burkesville passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at the Cumberland County Hospital. She was 82 years old. Gov. Beshear launches tornado relief resources website By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear launched a new website, governor.ky.gov/tornadoresources, to better assist those impacted by the tornadoes and the severe weather systems that occurred overnight Dec. 10 in Western Kentucky. "We want to make sure that every Kentuckian hurting from and impacted by the tornadoes can easily access the information they need to rebuild and recover from these storms," said Gov. Beshear. "We are committed to the folks of Western Kentucky, and we won't be here just this week or this month, but we will be here every single day for however long it takes to rebuild every building and every life, to get everyone as close as we can to where they need to be." Kentucky begins Renewable Chemical Production Program By Sean Southard Frankfort, KY - Kentucky companies can now apply for the state's Renewable Chemical Production Program, Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles has announced. The program incentivizes the production of more than 30 specified chemicals derived from biomass feedstocks by giving eligible companies tax credits for their capital investment, job creation, and renewable chemical production. The program will share tax credits previously established for renewable diesel or bio-diesel production in the commonwealth. The total amount of tax credit shall be five cents per molecular pound of weight of renewable chemicals produced in Kentucky by an eligible business, unless the total amount of approved credits for all taxpayers exceeds the annual cap of $10 million for the program. Kentucky developed the program to capitalize on its resources and infrastructure and to support the growth of the renewable chemical manufacturing industry. It addresses the unique opportunity to advance the state's economy by utilizing biomass feedstocks for the production of environmentally sustainable products. From a young girl and into adulthood, I participated in our church Christmas program. I began as an angel wearing coat hanger wings wrapped in silver tinsel, a sheet, and my patient leather Sunday shoes with white ruffled socks. The halo, also covered in tinsel, was shaped to fit my head. Older boys, playing the roles of wise men or shepherds, wore their father's robes and slippers. I don't know the origin of the shepherds' hooks, but we had them year after year. Mothers wound towels around the reluctant heads of the wise men. Mary and Joseph were the oldest teens. Columbia Baptist group brings donations to JOY Ministries From Mark Fudge The Columbia Baptist Church men's ministry was busy Tuesday morning packing boxes of food which have been donated by the church to JOY Ministries. In all, the church collected 50 boxes of food and non-perishable items. More than 15 people from Columbia Baptist helped to prepare boxes and carry them to the truck and then deliver them to the JOY Ministry location on Greensburg Street. COVID-19 News Brief & Vaccination Update 12/21/2021 By Sam Price Lake Cumberland District Health Department Due to the upcoming Christmas holiday, LCDHD offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, December 23 and 24. There will be no reports available on those dates, but reports will resume on Monday, December 27. LCDHD staff will continue to work positive cases reported over the weekend. The Omicron variant of COVID-19 was identified in Kentucky at the end of last week. It will only be a matter of time before it becomes the dominant strain here. While it seems it is highly transmissible, vaccination is still the best strategy to protect yourself and your families from serious illness and possible hospitalization. If you have not yet received your vaccination, please consider getting it now. Also, remember that boosters are strongly recommended for everyone after 6 months. Of today's 138 reported cases, 106 (77%) were unvaccinated and 18 of today's cases (13%) were in individuals 18 years of age or younger. Please take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones. Consider getting the vaccine if you are eligible and haven't, and wear a mask when in indoor settings where there are large crowds. Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 9.33%.
