Sharon Martin, 81, Casey County, KY (1940-2021)

Sharon Marjorie Skrivseth Martin of Liberty, KY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at home with her family around her. She was 81.

As a young girl, Sharon liked to ride bikes, climb trees, play in the playhouse, and drive her "tire" car. When she was ten years old in 1950, she committed her life to Christ. In the spring of 1951, she was baptized at Graceton Mennonite Church, along with three of her siblings and her parents.

Sharon worked tirelessly as a homemaker, teaching and training her children, helping on the farm, and running a fabric shop. As her child, if you could get her to laugh, you were "in business." Sharon taught Sunday School classes from the time that she was fifteen years old.

Selected Christmas ads, 1956

Sixty-five years ago -- December 1956 -- found America pretty much at peace. The Korean conflict for many was already a fading memory, and few citizens paid attention to the USA's then-miniscule presence in a far off place called Viet Nam.

The economy perked along nicely; Dwight Eisenhower was the President-(re)elect for four more years; and the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, passed just months earlier and funded by a one cent per gallon increase on the federal fuel tax, was the "open sesame" for many thousands of miles of interstate freeways. The hot gifts that year included Play-Doh and the Lone Ranger Cowboy Guitar. But meanwhile, back in The Shire...

By JIM

Christmas events and sports news dominated the front page of the December 19, 1956, Adair County News, although a brief item at the bottom of page one reported, "Walter D. 'Jody' Richards, Columbia, has been named to the Freshman Debating Team at Kentucky Wesleyan College."

The correspondent for Montpelier section reported Malcom Bennett had received top dollar for his tobacco, one basket bringing $68/cwt and his crop overall came in at $64/cwt. From Chance came news Mrs. Allen Morrison had taken a turn for the worse; Eldridge Earls had suffered a stroke; and that "Our school is progressing nicely. They are planning on having a Christmas tree Friday, December 21."

Just about every store in Columbia either advertised Christmas specials or took advertising space to wish patrons -- current and future -- a happy holiday season. There were so many, in fact, the News had to expand its regular eight pages to 12 to accommodate all the merchants.

Kentucky Color: A Tad Unnerving

By Billy Joe Fudge

In the act of cruising standing timber, one quite often finds oneself having to stand in place to contemplate one's next move. In the midst of one of these moments of contemplation recently, a movement caught in my peripheral vision was a tad unnerving. When one is a mile from the nearest residence, in the middle of the woods, without human accompaniment, with neither my bowie nor my howitzer and only my trusty walking stick, there are a couple of things that can be, a tad unnerving. One of those events is hearing a very unnatural, highly accelerated rattling sound only a few inches from one's foot. Another is realizing that the intense pain in your neck is only the first sneak attack of many salvos being launched from the Yellowjacket nest that you just a few seconds earlier had dragged your toe through!

On this day however, "the tad unnerving" event was picking up the unmistakable gait of a cantering canine just ahead. Now a large canine with pointed ears in the middle of nowhere suddenly brings thoughts of a wolf with a hungry, rabid pack of wild wolves in tow with the intentions of not going to bed on an empty stomach! Almost immediately I recognized it to be a rather large German Shepard. Rather than creating a fuss by alerting him (or her) to my presence, I remained motionless. Then, all at once, that super sense of smell that canines are famous for, picked up my odor on the breeze and the dog locked up into a dead stop. After nearly a minute the German Shepard broke loose from that motionless position and uneasily returned from which it had come.

Well, with a "no harm-no foul" attitude I continued on my way but with a higher than normal rate of unidentified noises always just-out-of-sight, somewhere behind me?!
