ISP calls for host parents in the new year

By Anna Peterson
Assistant Director of ISP

'Twas the week before Christmas and at the ISP House, everyone was stirring... and while most of us are getting ready for the most wonderful time of the year, students all over the world are preparing for the most exciting time of their life as they get ready to travel to the U.S. to study at Lindsey Wilson College.

Most of our international students join us for a fall semester, but we always have about 20 international students enroll for the spring semester. LWC ISP (International Student Programs) is fortunate enough to partner with folks from the local community who are willing to host and befriend these students during the school year. Host families DO NOT provide housing for the students. Instead, host families provide a friendship and a support system here in America to make the transition to and time in the U.S. a little bit easier. ISP is currently asking for new families to join the program and help create a friendly, comforting, home-away-from-home atmosphere here at LWC for each international student.

Beshear encourages Kentuckians to donate blood

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Friday, before donating blood at the American Red Cross Kentuckians for Kentuckians blood drive in the rotunda of the state Capitol, Gov. Andy Beshear provided an update on the state's response to last weekend's quad-state tornado outbreak.

"As we sit here almost one week to the day after the worst tornado disaster the state has ever seen, we are digging out," said Gov. Beshear. "Yes, we are down; yes, we are hurting; but we are not defeated and we are not broken. Together, we will dig out; together, we will clean up; and together, we will rebuild both structures and lives."

During the event, the Governor encouraged Kentuckians to visit redcrossblood.org or to find a blood drive or donation location near them and to donate blood to help Western Kentuckians in need.

Taylor Co. included in tornado tax-relief measures

By Jill Midkiff

Frankfort, KY - Governor Andy Beshear on Thursday announced that the Kentucky Department of Revenue (DOR) will honor the recently announced IRS special tax relief for taxpayers in any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as qualifying for individual assistance due to the tornados that caused extensive damage in parts of Western Kentucky and surrounding areas on Dec. 10-11, 2021.

Under the provisions of KRS 131.081(11), Kentucky honors federal extensions related to disaster relief for filing of income tax returns, including payment of tax due. This extension to file and pay taxes does not apply to sales tax and other type of taxes. However, taxpayers with disaster-related delays who are seeking filing extensions or have been assessed penalties for taxes other than income may contact DOR to request an extension or a waiver of penalties.

Individuals and households affected by severe storms, tornados and flooding who reside or have a business in Caldwell, Fulton, Graves, Hopkins, Marshall, Muhlenberg, Taylor and Warren counties qualify for this tax relief. DOR will provide the same relief to any additional counties designated by FEMA in Kentucky or neighboring states.

Wise: We are one Kentucky family this Christmas season

By Senator Max Wise

In light of the tragic aftermath of the severe weather that swept across the Commonwealth last weekend, instead of delivering season's greetings and wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas, my message takes a different tone. I pray that your Christmas season is filled with love and blessings, and you will remember the reason for the season. However, as we all know, many of our fellow Kentuckians are facing unimaginable pain, grief, and loss. That includes our neighbors here in the 16th District.

For many, the seasonal festivities that make Christmas so joyful will not be their experience this year. The days, weeks, and months ahead will prove difficult in ways most can never imagine. That is why we must unite as one Kentucky and work to bring hope, love, and peace to those who lost so much in a matter of hours. For a great example of our state's united response, look to the Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund, which has raised millions in contributions to help Kentuckians impacted by severe weather. Consider making a tax-deductible contribution at TeamWKYReliefFund.ky.gov.

Governor urges job seekers to consider telecommunications

For more information about a telecommunicator career with KSP visit the Kentucky Personnel Cabinet's website, or contact your local post on the KSP website.

By Captain Paul Blanton

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear and the Kentucky State Police (KSP) announced there are currently 45 full-time and part-time telecommunicator positions available at 14 post locations across the commonwealth. This is the highest vacancy rate in the agency's history for telecommunicators, which is one of the most essential roles in law enforcement's ability to respond to emergencies and critical needs of the state.

"Telecommunicators are crucial to our law enforcement agencies," said Gov. Beshear. "Over the past few days, we have seen first-hand the role they have had in the Western Kentucky Tornadoes. They have truly been the bridge between our state troopers and the public. I encourage Kentuckians who want a challenging career serving the communities in which they live to apply."

KSP Telecommunicators handle dispatch duties for Kentucky State Troopers, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officers and other emergency service agencies. Most important, they are that calming voice on the other line when someone calls 911. New hires will receive the training and equipment necessary for success, including a five-week paid training academy to become certified with the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council.

JOY Ministries nears fundraising goal

By Hannah Peck

In just two weeks the Columbia-Adair County Community has donated $27,000 to the J.O.Y. Ministries Annual Christmas Campaign! "I am shock, stunned, and awe-struck - but I shouldn't be," says Board Member Krystal Cundiff. "God works through this community and we just continued to be so humbled by his goodness!"

The 2021 J.O.Y. Ministries Christmas Campaign will be J.O.Y.'s largest to date, with a fundraising goal of $35,000. In the summer of 2021 JOY purchased Ruth's Place, a women & children's shelter slated to open in the new year. The anticipated expenses of operating a multi-unit shelter, continued operation of Cally's House, and meeting the ever-growing needs of the Adair County community are cause for this ambitious goal.

If you would like to support J.O.Y. this holiday season, you can donate today at:
