Bloomington Chapel community prayer at the hospital Monday

The Monday night Community Prayer Service for Bloomington Chapel Church will be held at 6:30pmCT on Monday, September 27, 2021, at T. J. Health Columbia, 901 Westlake Drive, Columbia, KY.

We ask that everyone park in the big parking lot so that we don't tie up the spots in the ER parking lot. We will meet at the small parking lot beside the ER. Social distancing and mask are recommended.

Marion "Derby" Smith of Columbia passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 88 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 1pmCT on Sunday, September 26, 2021, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Steve Martin, Bro. Terry Shelley and Bro. Randy Young officiating. Burial will follow in Haven Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is requested after 10amCT on Sunday.

Charles Leon Parnell, 74, Green County, KY

Charles Leon Parnell of Center Community of Green County, Kentucky, son of the late Demon Parnell and Ann Edwards Parnell, was born on Tuesday, June 10, 1947 in Adair County and departed this life on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at his home. He was 74 years, 3 months, and 11 days of age.

He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was employed with Ken-Dec as a buffer. He brought love, laughter and joy to all who knew him. He loved growing flowers, raising chickens and watching the hummingbirds.

Archery: LWC opens season at 3D Championships

The Lindsey Wilson archery team is set to begin their 2021-2022 season at the 3-D Regional Championship in London, KY, on Friday and the Mid-South Conference 3D Championship in Williamsburg, KY, on Saturday.

The 3D competition is an outdoor discipline where archers shoot at foam animals that are spread out on a course. The archers will shoot at each target and will be scored on how accurately they can hit the target.

Gov. expands KY National Guard support to more hospitals

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday during his weekly Team Kentucky update, Gov. Andy Beshear said he has now deployed 505 Kentucky National Guard members to 29 hospitals throughout the state, expanding the Guard's presence by 94 members and to four more hospitals.

"This is the largest deployment of the Kentucky National Guard for a health care crisis in the commonwealth's history," said Gov. Beshear. "We continue to hear from our hospitals how much these incredible professionals help."

As of today, 64 of 96 Kentucky hospitals are reporting critical staffing shortages, and 130 adult ICU beds are available statewide. Five Kentucky children with COVID-19 are currently on ventilators.

Bill would extend unemployment for domestic violence victims

Frankfort KY - Domestic violence victims often face many barriers when it comes to escaping their abuser.

Two Kentucky lawmakers shared plans today with the Interim Joint Committee on Economic Development and Workforce Investment that they hope will eliminate one of those barriers.

Rep. Nima Kulkarni, D-Louisville, and Rep. Samara Heavrin, R-Leitchfield, are drafting a measure to allow anyone who loses their job or must quit their job due to dating violence or abuse, sexual assault or stalking to qualify for unemployment insurance.

Pulaski Co. gets new tourism development project

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced today Horse Soldier Bourbon expects to create more than 50 jobs with a new $200 million tourism development project that will bring bourbon and tourism dollars to Pulaski County.

"Kentucky's bourbon industry continues to expand, bringing quality jobs and tourism dollars to communities in every corner of the commonwealth," said Gov. Beshear. "Today's announcement further reinforces our commitment to ensuring Kentucky is a top tourism destination, but also a premiere location for businesses to grow and expand. I want to thank Horse Soldier Bourbon and the leaders in the Somerset community for being an integral part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that Kentucky is a better, brighter place for the future."

Horse Soldier Bourbon is an award-winning, ultra-premium bourbon brand founded by retired members of the U.S. Special Forces - the first to enter Afghanistan, on horseback, following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The hand-selected detachment of Green Berets later became known as the "Horse Soldiers," and their story was told in the 2018 action drama film "12 Strong".

State releases county unemployment data for August 2021

Frankfort, KY - Unemployment rates fell in all 120 Kentucky counties between August 2020 and August 2021. No county unemployment rates rose or stayed the same, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

Locally, unemployment was down in Adair and all surrounding counties, both month-to-month and year-to-year. Cumberland and Taylor Counties continue to notch among the lowest unemployment rates in the state.

Columbia again enters contest for $25,000 prize

Mayor Pam Hoots encourages everyone to vote now to advance Columbia Public Square to the next round of a contest toward a $25,000 prize in the program recognizing America's Main Streets and their "Road to Recovery."

Independent We Stand, a national small business movement, has kicked-off its sixth annual America's Main Streets contest, a three-month long web-driven contest to help consumers, small business owners and Main Street organizations.

Tips during September preparedness month: We pretty much all have cell phones, loaded with contact information. But what happens when your cell phone isn't available?

Do you know enough of your contact numbers? Do you have them backed up? Write them down and put them with important papers.

Even if they are backed up to the cloud, if you don't have access to the cloud, then what? Do your children know not only your numbers, but the numbers of other family and friends? Do you have sufficient charges and power packs available just in case? Have all these questions for your family's safety in case of power outages.

Campbellsville fire being called suspicious

Campbellsville Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a report of a grill on fire under a carport. Upon arrival firefighters found the grill fire had extended into the residence and firefighters encountered fire conditions inside and outside the residence.

Firefighters made a fire attack and conducted a search for occupants. No firefighters or civilian injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is suspicious and is under investigation.

Creelsboro Festival is Saturday, Sept 25th

The Creelsboro Festival returns for its second Year Saturday, September 25, 2021.. Historic Creelsboro was once the largest town in Russell County, KY when the Cumberland River was the main highway.

The Creelsboro Country Store will have its doors open, ready for the big day! Plenty of food and exciting things to see and do that day. Music from The Winding Creek begins at 10amCT. Hayrides will continue all day.

Vendors will be open and Columbia's Richard Phelps will be on hand impersonating Elijah Creel.

The Blakey Quartet will perform gospel music at noon.

The History of Creelsboro Video will be shown at the Nazarene Church at 11am and again at 2pmCT with historian Paul Patton.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 9/22/2021

Of today's 362 reported cases, 307 (85%) were unvaccinated and 92 of today's cases (25%) were in individuals 18 years of age or younger. Please take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones. Consider getting the vaccine if you are eligible and haven't, and wear a mask when in indoor settings where there are large crowds.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 11.66%.

Deaths: We are sad to report 1 new death since our last report. We have experienced a total of 579 deaths resulting in a 1.64% mortality rate (about 1 in 61) among known cases. This compares with a 1.26% mortality rate at the state level and a 1.6% mortality rate at the national level. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families and friends who have lost loved ones.

Hospitalizations: We presently have 36 cases in the hospital. This is equal to what we reported in our last report. We have had a total of 1,572 hospitalizations resulting in a 4.46% hospitalization rate (about 1 in 22) among known cases. The state hospitalization rate is 4.23%. The latest data shows that 95.83% of Lake Cumberland's ICU beds are filled, and 44.16% of ventilator capacity is being utilized.
