Kentucky receives $8.1M in Federal AmeriCorps Service Grants

Federal funding will help meet critical state and local needs

By Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) acknowledged today proof of commitment to Kentucky communities from AmeriCorps, a national service program administered by Serve Kentucky, a CHFS agency. Twenty-two AmeriCorps-funded grants will provide more than $8.1 million in federal funding in Kentucky.

Gov. Andy Beshear said, "Through the support of AmeriCorps, Kentucky's commitment to service will be significantly boosted. As we continue to recover from the pandemic, AmeriCorps members and volunteers are even more crucial, and this commitment from AmeriCorps will help us continue to make positive impact in our communities."

The grant funding is provided by AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and community volunteerism. Funding will impact efforts in Kentucky ranging from utility assistance, to housing needs, to clothing and food to those in need, to tutoring, mentoring, teaching and other educational services for all grade levels and post-secondary, to helping to address social needs at senior centers, senior living facilities and hospice facilities.

Kalonji signs with Lindsey Wilson Basketball

By Kyle Jackson

Veron Kalonji is set to join the Lindsey Wilson Men's Basketball team for the upcoming 2021-22 campaign, head coach Chris Starks announced on Wednesday.

"Veron will provide us with an athletic, physical presence in the middle on both ends of the floor. Offensively, he can score inside and will be able to knock down that trailing 3 point shot. Defensively, he will give us a physical post presence, while still being able to handle any of our ball screen coverages on the perimeter. Veron is mature beyond his years and will be expected to provide leadership not only on the floor, but off the floor as well."

Kalonji joins the Blue Raiders after completing the first two seasons of his career at Lamar Community College and transfers after spending last season with Northwest Oklahoma State. He is a six-foot-eight-inch guard from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

FAKH to host BackPack Program Fundraiser

Funds raised will support BackPack Programs in all participating counties

By Jaime Thomas

Elizabethtown, KY - From July 19-23, Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland (FAKH) will host a week-long concerted fundraising effort to raise money for children on the BackPack Program in each participating county, the organization announced. For food insecure children on the program, bags of 12-14 easy-to-prepare food items are placed discreetly in their backpacks each Friday school is in session.

"Nearly one in five children in our service area face hunger," said Jamie Sizemore, FAKH executive director. "That's why it's so important to support the BackPack Program, which provides food for these kids to hold them over on the weekend when they aren't receiving breakfast and lunch at school."

Each participating county will organize an online fundraiser that directly supports their specific BackPack Program.
