Carol Perkins: The telephone is ringing

Previous Column: Design a Father

By Carol Perkins

You can count on the phone (landline or cell) ringing at the worst possible times. For instance, the minute you step in the shower, it will ring. The minute you go to the bathroom, the phone will ring. Never fails. The minute I go outside, the phone rings. You can also count on the phone ringing when you sit down to eat. The fork is usually headed toward that first bite, and it will ring (the landline). If you go to bed early, the phone will ring. If you sleep later than usual, the phone will jar you awake. "Were you asleep?"

If you have company, the phone will ring at least once. If you ignore the call, the party will worry about why you aren't answering, so they call again. If you're a passenger and the driver answers the Bluetooth attached phone and launches into a conversation that lasts all the way to Bowling Green, you might as well be alone.

When you are in the middle of a meeting and forget to turn off the cell phone, you can count on it ringing. Everyone stares. When a phone rings at church, I've often thought how funny it would be if the preacher asked if God was calling, but some might think that blasphemy. You can also count on those who answer their phone at a restaurant talking loudly. During a manicure, someone will ruin the relaxing moment. It never fails.

One of the most uncomfortable moments with my cell phone happened at a funeral.

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - With COVID-19 restrictions lifted and people starting to travel again, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) is preparing for tourism season this summer and fall by releasing a brand new version of its popular guide to the Commonwealth's wineries and craft breweries: Drink KY(R).

"Our Drink KY app allows us to showcase the best in Kentucky agritourism for wineries and breweries," Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles said. "The fact that we can bring this content to you in an even better, sleeker, easier-to-use interface is great news as people start traveling again. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture plans to make a big push this year to encourage people to visit summer or fall agritourism destinations. After a year of uncertainty, they need our support."

KY Child care providers awarded $763M in federal funds

By Crystal Staley/Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced today that Kentucky has been awarded more than $763 million in federal funds to provide relief for child care providers in the commonwealth that have been financially impacted by the global pandemic, in turn helping families with young children.

The Governor said the funding supports more than just child care.

"This funding is an investment not only in our young children and their educators, but in our economy as well," Gov. Beshear said. "My administration is committed to early childhood development and rebuilding the state's economy as we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis. This funding allows our child care providers to stay open, keeps parents in the workforce and keeps our infrastructure strong to build a better Kentucky."

The three-year funding is from the $1.9 trillion emergency relief bill - the American Rescue Plan Act - which provides economic relief to our nation's families, workers and businesses. Of these funds, $39 billion was specified for the child care industry, both for providers and to support families that need help paying for child care.
