KY DOC/DJJ to resume visitation June 20

By Morgan Hall

Frankfort, KY - On Tuesday, Gov. Andy Beshear and the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Mary Noble announced facilities operated by Department of Corrections (DOC) and Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) will resume allowing in-person visitation beginning the week of June 20.

"One more step toward reopening the commonwealth is resuming in-person visitation at our state prisons and youth detention and residential centers," said Gov. Beshear.

DOC and DJJ temporarily halted in-person visitations in March 2020 as one precaution taken to prevent COVID-19 from entering and spreading through the facilities, and within the communities in which they are located.

Vaccinated family and friends of those individuals who are housed within state custody at either a DOC or DJJ facility must schedule an appointment to visit with their loved one prior to arrival. Available visitation dates and times at each specific facility will be published on DOC and DJJ's websites June 4.

ISP seeks hosts for LWC International Students

By Sabine Eastham, Director
Lindsey Wilson College International Student Program (ISP)

Summer has arrived! With this continue preparations to welcome our new international student population in August. A big part of their success is getting paired with folks from our community.

Hosts do not house international students. Rather they agree to have regular contact with the students throughout the school year. It usually involves having them to your house a few times a year for a meal or special event and checking in on them periodically to make sure they are adjusting to American life. When our college's international students return to their home country, they will tell their family all about America and what they have found here in Columbia with their host family.

We are looking for area families and individuals to participate in our ever growing network of host families. When area families get involved with our international students, they become part of a ripple effect. They play a big part in introducing international students to American life. Sharing local and family traditions with international students will help them understand what America is all about. They are young, they are here in Columbia, and they are eager to learn about American life beyond the college campus. With this I refer to previous testimonials made by some of our wonderful hosts. Perhaps this will resonate with some of your readers and they are too, will make the decision to join the LWC ISP Host family program:

Motorists reminded to buckle up on Memorial Day weekend

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - As the Memorial Day holiday approaches, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety is joining law enforcement around the commonwealth for the annual Click It or Ticket campaign, encouraging motorists to buckle up and stay safe.

The federally funded campaign is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) high-visibility seat belt enforcement effort running May 24 - June 6.

"Kentuckians came together this past year to help save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic and we're asking for that same dedication to safety on our roadways," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "We must have the public's help to spread this life-saving message: Commit to safe driving behaviors when behind the wheel, and everyone - both drivers and passengers - should pledge to buckle up."

Governor: 2M Kentuckians have been vaccinated

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Tuesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced 2,006,742 people have received at least their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in Kentucky.

"When you look at this, it is just a miracle," said Gov. Beshear. "Fifteen months after the first case of COVID-19 in Kentucky, not only do we have effective vaccines, but we have 2 million people vaccinated. It's really exciting."

The Governor also noted Moderna announced its COVID-19 vaccine is 100% effective in a study of adolescents ages 12 to 17. The company said it plans to ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to expand the emergency use of its vaccine for this age group early next month. If approved, it would be the second COVID-19 vaccine available for this age group, as Pfizer's vaccine has already been approved for ages 12 and older.

Finally, the Governor said this week, he renewed the executive order prohibiting price gouging.
