Birds of Kentucky: Eastern Kingbird

2021-05-25 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen.
All About Birds has this to say about Tyrannus tyrannus: "With dark gray upperparts and a neat white tip to the tail, the Eastern Kingbird looks like it’s wearing a business suit. And this big-headed, broad-shouldered bird does mean business—just watch one harassing crows, Red-tailed Hawks, Great Blue Herons, and other birds that pass over its territory."

Off-duty firefighter prevents a drowning at GRL

Remember: Wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is the simplest life-saving strategy for being in or around the water.

By Chris Taylor, Fire Chief
Campbellsville Fire - Rescue

On Monday, May 24, 2021, at 6:35pmET, off duty firefighter Cody Wood and his wife, Morgan, had just launched their personal boat to enjoy the evening on Green River Lake. Less than 5 minutes into their trip, Firefighter Wood noticed several people that appeared to be struggling in the "No Swimming" area at Green River Lake State Park. He recognized the signs of a drowning victim and quickly jumped into action.

He notified the 911 center via portable radio and requested our fire department special operations dive team and emergency medical services.

The victim had gone under water several times and was struggling to breathe. Wood moved his boat in position and was able to grab the near drowning victim. He was able to assist her and two other family members in his boat.

The patient was evaluated by Campbellsville Taylor County EMS and refused medical transport. This situation could have had a tragic ending if not for the quick actions of Firefighter Wood.
