Quarles praises new USDA hemp rule By Sean Southard Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles applauded the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) announcement that it will implement the final rule on hemp production developed under the Trump Administration. "The final rule on hemp production is much improved over the interim final rule previously issued by USDA," Commissioner Quarles said. "The improvements were the results of work conducted by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and other state agencies to provide feedback to the USDA. I am grateful for all of the work done by the previous administration, including that of former Under Secretary of Agriculture Greg Ibach and his team, to have an open line of communication with state leaders." The 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp as the plant cannabis sativa with not more than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) measured on a dry weight basis and directed USDA to develop a regulatory framework for states to manage hemp programs. Precious memories - a Sulphur Well, KY journal Precious memories below are from the journal written by Mrs. Ruby Mitchell Williams from her lifetime in Sulphur Well, Kentucky. The Journal was among the keepsakes in the possession of her young friend and admirer Quinn Jessie and is shared by Quinn's mother, retired Postmaster and historian Cora Emma London Jessie. Things that I remember and things that I believe. It may not be of any interest to you but I am leaving it for all of you to read. - Ruby Williams Third Sunday in August - August, 1972 Today has been another Homecoming Day for Sulphur Well. In the late [18]80s the young people of Hart County set the third Sunday in August as the day when they would all be at Sulphur Well on the same day, so for nearly a century this day has brought large crowds to the Well. The crowd this year was estimated at six or seven hundred, a small crowd compared to the people who came in the earlier years. For a number of years the transportation was horse and buggy. SB128 would allow students to retake a year of school By Jordan Hensley, LRC Frankfort, KY - A second chance. That's what lawmakers say is the goal of Senate Bill 128. With this measure, public and nonpublic school students from kindergarten through 12th grade might have the opportunity to re-do the last school year. "This the bill that would allow school systems--it is not a mandate-- to give students and their families permission to retain their students for a year because of issues involved in the pandemic," explained Rep. Steve Riley, R-Glasgow, on the House floor tonight on behalf of the bill's sponsor Sen. Max Wise, R-Campbellsville. Riley said the bill would allow any student, regardless of academic status, to re-do the school year. The bill would also allow high school students to have a fifth-year of eligibility to play sports as long as they do not turn 19 before Aug. 1 of their senior year. LWC Baseball drops road contest to #8 Cumberlands By Kyrin Mayfield Williamsburg, KY The Lindsey Wilson baseball team fell 10-0 in seven innings to No. 8 Cumberlands (KY) on Tuesday. The Patriots offense was difficult to contain as Cumberlands (20-3, 1-2 Mid-South Conference) hit three home runs in just the first four innings. Austin Rayno came close to getting the Blue Raiders (8-11, 5-4 MSC) on the board first in the opening frame with a deep hit to left field that was one foot short of clearing the wall. However, the Patriots' Over Torres was successful in lifting his ball over the left field fence as his two-run home run gave Cumberlands a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 3/16/2021 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department Our total number of new cases went up slightly compared to last Tuesday, so our 7-day average incidence rate went up slightly. We now have 4 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, and Russell; and 6 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: Adair, Green, McCreary, Pulaski, Taylor, and Wayne. None of our counties are presently in the "red-critical" range. Until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.
