Black leaders promote trust in the COVID-19 vaccine

By Crystal Staley/Brice Mitchell, CHFS

Frankfort, KY - With a commitment to provide equitable access to COVID-19 vaccinations across Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear is working with the Lexington chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Today at Shiloh Baptist Church, 10 members of the community voiced confidence in and rolled up their sleeves to receive the Moderna vaccine.

Gov. Beshear joined five local leaders to help overcome hesitancy and distrust.

"Thought leaders from many communities are stepping forward from all over the state, asking what they can do and how they can help," said Gov. Beshear. "Today, prominent African-Americans in Lexington are speaking out. Their words of encouragement for receiving the shot help break down some of the barriers that can lead to vaccine inequity."

Johnson set to compete at NAIA Indoor National Championship

By Christopher Coombs

The official rosters and entry list have been announced for all qualifiers of the 2021 Women's Indoor Track and Field National Championships, national officials announced on Tuesday evening.

Meredith Johnson is the lone Blue Raider to qualify for the championship doing so in the 1,000-meter run. She is seeded ninth in the event after posting a time of 3:01.48 earlier this season. Johnson competes in the prelims on March 3 at 3:30pmCT and potentially in the finals on March 5 at 1pmCT.

Due to inclement weather and COVID-19 issues, the men and women's indoor track team were only able to compete at one regular-season event that counted towards their national championship qualifying times.

The NAIA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship hosted by Dakota State University will take place at the Ruth Donohoe First Dakota Fieldhouse in Yankton, S.D. on March 3-6.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 2/23/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added more cases today than last Tuesday, so our 7-day average incidence rate went up. We still have 5 counties in the "orange-critical" range of community-spread: Casey, Clinton, McCreary, Pulaski, and Wayne. We have 5 counties are in the "red-critical" range of community-spread: Adair, Cumberland, Green, Russell, and Taylor.

Schools have moved back into second place for the most common place visited before a positive case is isolated. While the kids are the least likely to get sick from the virus, and while the staff are in the vaccination process, there is concern that community-spread will happen between the kids at school and then from the kids to their parents and grandparents, then to work and church. The bottom-line, we shouldn't become cavilier with following the guidance.

While more and more vaccine sites are opening in our area and more and more vaccine is flowing in, until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 6.3%.
