KYTC: Motorists should expect some refreezing tonight

By Wes Watt

After battling frigid temperatures and multiple winter weather storm systems for more than a week, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 crews have made progress in clearing roadways. Most priority A routes and priority B routes are in good shape. Priority C routes have been treated and plowed multiple times with many of them in good shape. Some priority C routes still have coverage or partially coverage depending on the area.

Some counties will be staying over tonight to continue to work, while others will be suspending operations until tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to dip well below 20 degrees tonight and salting will not be option. Counties continuing operations will focus on areas they can still plow. All counties will resume snow & ice operations in the morning.

Lots of roadways had a significant amount of water on them this afternoon due to melting of the snow. Motorists should expect some of these areas to refreeze overnight. Secondary and rural routes will still have some slick spots on them so motorists should use caution and adjust driving behavior if out tonight and in the morning.

Bird smorgasbord

2021-02-18 - Columbia, KY - Photo by George Kolbenschlag.
Here is a "charm" of Goldfinches in their winter coats sharing a smorgasbord of seed (less the pickled fish) on my back patio. My bird feeders were frozen over, and I felt sorry for the neighborhood collection of winged lovelies so I put this on my open patio. It took about ten minutes before the birds found it. At one point I had five species at one time sharing the dinner table. In addition to the Goldfinches there were Cardinals, several species of Sparrows, Blue Jays, Tufted Titmouse's, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Juncos, and even a Mockingbird, Robin and an unkempt Starling or two. No Bald Eagle since there was no fish on the platter.

KYTC: Most routes still covered or partially covered

By Wes Watt

Bowling Green, KY - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 3 crews battled another wave of winter weather that moved into the area last night. Crews from each District 3 county reported an estimated two to four inches of fresh snow overnight. The new fallen snow recovered roads that were clear after two earlier waves of winter weather.

Crews worked through the night and continue to work this morning. Motorists should expect most routes to be covered or partially covered depending on area. Interstate 65 has the right lane pretty clear and the middle lane is expected to be clear soon. Ramps are partially clear with ice spots. Interstate 165 has all four lanes nearly cleared with ramps partially cleared.

Crews began making progress once the snowfall rate slowed down. The focus continues to be mainly priority A routes with some priority B routes being plowed.

It is expected once the sun comes up progress will pick up even further. If motorists have to be out it is advised they adjust driving behavior, slow down and leave plenty of space between vehicles.

Phillip Coffey - Just a Sniffle

No fitting day for picking rocks and impediments off the ridges.
Digging down through the frozen 'Tundra' to find them.
If britches needed mended sure Mom would add stitches.
"Doofus" always in and out with no 'earthly' rhyme or reason.

Lot of rambling thoughts and muttering from the 'ole Ridge Runner.'
Some of them with mirth to share -others it is necessary to stifle.
There can be blessings from all the experiences if properly carried
Through the furrows of anguished reality-most just a sniffle.

Picked a lot of rocks off ridge fields either tossing to the woods or loading on a wagon to be placed in perhaps a gully that had formed on the steep slopes. Dad bought an adjoining farm from his sister, Charity that joined our farm. Her husband Dallas had passed. One of the first things he and I did after he bought it was take a trailer hitched to a tractor load the rocks scattered exposed on the hillside and carry them to a gully to give pause to the erosion forming.
