Former KY Governors of both parties receive COVID vaccine

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Five former Governors and their spouses, spanning five decades of service to the commonwealth, received the COVID-19 vaccination Monday in the Capitol Rotunda to emphasize the bipartisan support for the safe and effective vaccines and urge fellow Kentuckians to take the vaccine.

Those who received the Moderna vaccine Monday include Julian Carroll, John Y. Brown Jr., Martha Layne Collins and Bill Collins, Ernie and Glenna Fletcher and Steve and Jane Beshear.

Jointly they said: "We all look forward to the day we can get back out into the Kentucky communities we love so much and gather with our friends and family, but until then, we urge our fellow Kentuckians to wear masks, limit their gatherings and take the vaccine. This vaccine is a medical miracle - the shot of hope Kentuckians and Americans have been looking forward to for almost a year to save lives, reduce the spread of this deadly virus, allow more of our neighbors to return to work and ensure our children and educators can safely return to school. This vaccine is safe, effective and our best hope of defeating COVID. We urge all Kentuckians to roll up their sleeves, take the fight to COVID and do their part to move the commonwealth forward."

Hardin Planetarium to present Perserverance to Reach Mars

By Tommy Newton

Perseverance to Reach Mars will open Thursday night at WKU's Hardin Planetarium. The show will be presented at 7pmCT on Tuesday, 7pmCT on Thursday and 2pmCT on Sunday through February 18, 2021. Hardin Planetarium is located on the corner of State St & 15th Ave, at 1906 College Heights Blvd, Bowling Green, KY.

NASA's Perseverance Rover will reach Mars on February 18, 2021, to begin its search for signs of ancient microbial life, and characterizing environmental conditions that could affect future astronauts living and working on Mars. Perseverance will be only the fifth rover to attempt landing on Mars - when less than 50% of the missions ever sent to Mars by any space agency have been successful. The mission for this 1-ton, compact-car sized, nuclear-powered science laboratory on 6-wheels is to navigate around Jezero Crater's ancient river delta, analyzing 3.5 billion-year old samples formed when Mars was still wet.

The 35-minute presentation is free of charge and suitable for all ages. No ticket required and no reservations are accepted. It will begin on time, with no late entrance permitted. Masks are to be worn at all times within the building.

History Monday: May 2021 Be Kinder to All

By Mike Watson

A New Year has arrived. It happens once a year, every year, and resolutions are made, then broken. Good things come to pass, and sad ones, too. A new beginning is a fine thing, we all need this from time to time, if just to clear the cob-webs from the mind. Personally, I do not make resolutions any more, at least not in the traditional way. Those made in past years for things that were not likely to be adhered to, almost as if designed to be broken, are things of the past for me. But periodically I do need to sweep away the cob-webs, and for me this is best accomplished in cleaning off my desk... not an easy thing to do.

At times my long-suffering wife, Renea, will pop her head in the office door and ask if there is any trash she can take away. My response, nearly always the same, amounts to 'No'. There may well be a full basket of paper, but I have a process. I must go through it piece by piece before it heads to the big trash can in the garage. Why? Well, I have these cleaning seizures from time to time, tossing out bits and shreds of paper with old notes and addresses, newspaper clippings and duplicated research. But I feel I must go through this pile before the long, last journey to the landfill or recycle center. And every time I do the re-sort, I find several items that should not have ended up there, rescued from the jaws of the garbage truck and returned to the pile(s) on my too-large desk. And I say that I will never do this again...but I do.

From the piles on my desk are articles to complete, research to tackle, and projects to polish, including:

LCDHD: All area counties back in red-critical range

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/3/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We are uncertain when the next COVID-19 vaccine shipments will arrive. After health care workers and nursing home residents and staff, as of today, the next phase will include school staff, first responders, and those who are seventy and older.

All our counties are back in the "Red-Critical" range of community spread. We are still having high numbers of new cases, and high rates of hospitalizations and death, so let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
