Governor: Additional steps will be targeted

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear warned Kentuckians that COVID-19 continues to spread at a frightening pace within the commonwealth and across the United States.

As of this morning, two companies, Moderna and Pfizer, have announced their vaccines appear to be more than 90% effective as clinical trials continue. The Governor said he hopes this great news will inspire all Kentuckians to keep fighting the virus in the months before those vaccines become widely available.

"We need everybody with this news to buckle down, to make sure you are making good decisions each and every day because people's lives depend on it," said Gov. Beshear. "If we can just get to the point where this vaccine will be widely available, we can make sure we don't lose people. We need your help. This is now a time-limited virus. So if you're tired, now you can see the end. Let's get our second wind.

"Today, we're talking about where this virus is; tomorrow, we're going to share some modeling about where we think it's going; and then on Wednesday, if we don't see a change in the numbers, we'll talk about some additional steps that we may have to take to try to get this virus under control.

"If we have to take additional steps, it will not look like what we went through in March, in April and into May. At that time, we did not have enough testing; we had almost no PPE to protect those in hospitals; we didn't know the most effective ways to treat this virus so the mortality rate was through the roof; and we didn't know as much about the spread. If we have to take additional steps, they will be more targeted."

Today, Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Eric Friedlander also updated Kentuckians on the state's efforts against COVID-19 in long-term care facilities.

ACJE: Please protect yourself from infection

By Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan

We have had 104 new COVID-19 cases in Adair County in the last week. That's just the ones we know about.

I've heard people say "the more people we test, the more cases we have". That might be true in a sense, but not really. Whether the cases are confirmed or not, we still have the cases. We have more than we know about.

I know everyone is tired of hearing it, I am too! I'm tired of saying it. But PLEASE wear your mask, social distance, stay home if you can. Adair County lost 6 people in a week. And no, not all of them had underlying health issues.

This virus is killing more people than ever!

Students encouraged to apply for 2021 Ag Athletes of the Year

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky student-athletes who are involved in agriculture are invited to apply for one of six scholarships and recognition as a 2021 Kentucky Ag Athlete of the Year.

To qualify, student-athletes must be Kentucky farmers or involved in agriculture; must be graduating seniors in high school; and must be accepted to a college, university, or trade school following graduation. An agriculture major is not required, and preference will be given to Kentucky colleges; however, out-of-state schools will be considered if the applicant is seeking a specialized degree in an agricultural field.

Two student-athletes - one male and one female - will be named Outstanding Kentucky Ag Athletes of the Year and will be awarded $2,000 scholarships. Four student-athletes - two males and two females - will be awarded $1,000 scholarships as Kentucky Ag Athletes of the Year. Winners will be announced at the 2021 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen(R) basketball tournament in March at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The scholarships are payable to an institution of higher learning. Funding for the scholarships comes from the KDA's "Ag Tag" program, which is funded by voluntary donations from Kentucky motorists when they buy or renew their farm vehicle license plates. No state taxpayer dollars will be used to fund the scholarship awards.

Student-athletes must apply online by Jan. 11. To apply, go to khsaa.org/ge83-agriculture-athlete-of-the-year-scholarship-application.

History Monday: Vaudeville Show in Columbia, 1914

By Mike Watson

There was a time, before television, even before radio broadcasts, there were live shows that traveled the country, entertaining the population in towns and cities, large and small. We all know that, I suppose, but it is interesting to look back at some of the entertainments of our ancestors, such as this event.

The first week of June, 1914 saw a theatrical troupe pull into Columbia. The Revere-Jackson Show, with fourteen vaudeville artists, set up shop--or rather, tents--to exhibit for a full week. The show opened on Monday night and continued through the upcoming Saturday night, with an "entire and complete change of program each night." Having been on tour for eleven years, the acts must certainly have been well honed. Doors opened at 7, for best seats, and the show began at 8.

The singing and acting were said by the local newspaper to be "first-class and the music is enchanting." The performances were "strictly a moral entertainment."
